  • Being courteous and respectfully be strait up with them. Start small chat and quietly say your on a low budget trip and would appreciate waiving the fee so that you could get a car rental/cab fare or don't have to stress the possibilty of a fee on the return trip and possibly have to leave behind your boards. Also have gotten around it when having to check a bag that gets a charge, which is usually a much lower fee. Ask if since that bag is getting a fee if they could waive the boardbag. Both have worked out for me well. Occasionally will ask to speak with a manager about this when the clerk is disagreeable or unsure if they have the authority to even do so, often times he/she is understanding and does so.

  • My friend and I were flying out of NYC on American Airlines to Nicaragua and somehow got away without paying for a board bag because the lines were long and the manager apparently didn't care that much. We also got away with saying we had two "bodyboards" on our way back from Nicaragua. But then again, we are two girls... we just somehow lucked out.

the best approach is saying it's something along the same lines, like a skimboard or bodyboard or something like that... since they don't charge for it. Maybe the board bag companies should start making bags look different?!?!

  • If everyone says "how" then it ruins the method.
    Sorry.

I use to take them to the skycaps and tip big.
Once I posted that info it stopped working.

    Simple coincidence?

  • I heard dakine makes a bag that hides your second board. I always tell them there is only 1, but I've been called out and had them ask me to open the bag, which ended up me paying for all 3.

  • Used to be super easy via the above methods and others, especially in and out of NY. Not so much anymore. Sometimes you get lucky. These days, know before you go and factor that into your choice of carriers- I always print out a copy of their policy and bring it with me- youre probably going to get charged, thats just a backup because I have heard of people getting blackmailed for MORE than the airlines written policy by a cluless agent. For all this, its likely to get there dinged....traveling with boards is no fun.

  • A tip.  When you see the check in person has a face like they just smelled poop and your next in line to be called up to their counter, I let the person behind me go ahead.  Eye contact and straight up bullshlt work best, IMHO.  FYI, Parachutes and hangliders fly free on most airlines, common courtesy type stuff.  Sir whats in your 11" boardbag? Response, my hanglider equipment. baggage handlers response, have a good flight..

I like that.... when they open the bag and see your LB in there and ask "what kind of hanglider is this"? You can always say "I didnt say it worked well...." ;D

If u have balls, as onefin does, polite BS does tend to work best..

  • If you arrive early to the airport on the trip back from remote islands, surfboards usually go free until airlines hit their weight limit, then they start charging.

Be really nice too, when you're in line. Not obsequious and overly talkative.
