  • I got a look a little while ago at a handful of recent photos of me on some waves, and damn, I look WAYYYY too serious for a guy having so much fun! As a matter of fact, I cant think of any pic of me on a wave where I didnt look absoultely dead serious. I know I'm loving every second of it while I'm out there, but you'd never ever know it from the expression(s) on my face.

I think I (seriously  ;) ) have to try and smile more. As crazy as it may sound, I think it may relax me and help improve my surfing a bit. Who knows...cant hurt, right?

  • I have a yoga teacher who when in difficult poses asks the class to smile...it really helps.  I'm not sure it would help you make a section you weren't going to make while surfing but it seems to make the unpleasant more pleasant...  I wonder...

  • i think it would be tough to find too many photos of any up and riding surfers smiling. We all know you're smiling on the inside!

  • I had one wave at Rincon (CA) this winter where I know I was smiling...finally got a wave and was screaming to my friend as I went down the line (I probably looked like a psycho).  I was just so happy hahaha.

  • Yeah I am always too focused to smile i guess.  The smile comes later.

But, I thought this was a post about smiling in the lineup... I think that is a good idea, too many grumpy frowners out there.

That's something I do a lot of - I'm usually just soo happy to be out surfing, I cant help but smile.

That's why it's good to surf around people who smile. Lightens up the session. I can't really smile while I'm taking off....definitely on the way back out from a good one though.

  • We're not smiling because we are always looking ahead and planning our next move and trying to get to where we want on the wave as quickly as possible and make our ride last as long as possible. Our brains are thinking at a million miles a second. Our concentration is intense.

I was thinking the same thing today as I surfed - it's not that I'm not smiling because I'm not having a good time, I'm just concentrating as best I can....

When can I expect to see the results of said samurai-concentration in your body boarding? Just playing.

I look angry as eff all when I'm surfing (the standing up variety) as well, even if the waves are perfect, I'm in trpical water and there's no one else out. Then again, I'm kind of a jerk.
