  • steve and nancy treated me so well when I lived there, I lived in one of the brown trout shacks up the road from them just above the cow pasture.  I think I still have one of my woodflow decks.

  • Just in a good place in my marriage  and with my family , happy with some surprisingly good summer surf , money coming in OK . I pretty much erased binge drinking from my program and have been surfing , cycling, swimming and doing calistethetics all on the regs which  has contributed to a more positive energy

  • everyone knows its always better where dorado was, thus with a month of mediocre surf dorado has been surf mediocre plus surf for 3 weeks straight.  As mentioned b4 give a December and January of flatness mixed with freezing balls cold and see if he is singing a different tune.  Im assuming no bong hits for FDNY so I rule that out immediately but not a bad idea for some of our other crotchity board members.

I now aspire to not let lack of surf regulate my moods and embrace my time away from the surf to make up for time missed with m y three children . You never know though but having a more balanced approach to my marriage and children is enabling me to enjoy my surfing more guilt free and has also allowed me to go on a couple of trips a year without the family to destinations with solid surf . Working now only a mile from home and a decent amount of Overtime and a wife who only works part time and mostly from home = more water time here and abroad and a happier overall Dorado .

  • The last week or two of sessions, tho, have been marred by these wild swings in apparent ability (or lack there-of).

at least you have swings of apparent ability...which puts you ahead of many!  I didn't even need to look at who started this thread to know by the title.  ;)  SC: be generous with yourself...agree with the others who say just 'play' sometimes (and/or just absorb the session and let it be what it is, whatever it is).  Easier said than done for sure -- I was so mentally out of the game about 2 weeks ago (consumed with other stresses in life), that I just called it a day and headed in.  Didn't want to bring down the friends around me who were getting good waves - I just wasn't in it.  But it was cool - I enjoyed the bike ride home in the dark, the beer, and the warm shower.  Knew there'd be another day - and within days, there was.
ZenDorado is a sage sage, for sure.

  • Weekend roundup:

Friday: In some ways, I was happy just to make it out after a grueling, bruising paddle out - got a couple of rides, but nothing memorable. Mostly my own fault for not feeling up to paddle-battling at the peak, and then not managing peak well when they came my way. But that's alright - It was a good session, tho - if for no other reason than I got to learn a bit from watching Jeff Anthony up close.

Saturday morning: Closing out and shutting down on the low tide - found a couple of corners, tho - and actually had some fun with friends, old and new (great seeing you, Duke!)

Saturday early afternoon - Despite a southwesterly flow giving it all sorts of texture, I got into a real good groove and surfed about as well as I am capable of surfing - and actually came out of the water feeling great. Now I'm not exactly known for hacks, but man, there was one backside hack that I snapped off that surprised me - nice feeling. (Amazing what's possible when you get your foot back on the tailpad ::) )

Sunday afternoon:Despite pretty clean conditions and nice (albeit shifty) peaks all over the place, I surfed about as poorly as humanly possible. No energy, no balance, no nothing. Blew set waves, just awful. Now admittedly I spent a wee bit too much time at Irishfest later on Saturday, but could I possibly have turned into such a lightweight that a couple of beers and a couple of JD's and coke could throw me off *this* badly? Whatever the reason, I managed to follow up a great Saturday with a miserable Sunday. Ughhh.

Inconsistency is my middle name. ::) ::)

Oh well..I guess this means I'll just have to keep on practicing. ;D

  • Well, SC, after going through one of my worst stretches of surfing this year I have decided to take a cue from Dorado and get a cheater board. Hardly surfing this year, and trying to recover from an injury has meant I'm half the surfer I was--and that wasn't much to begin with. I think there is an ego problem that prevents many of us--and I don't specifically mean you SC-- from increasing the volume of boards when necessary. I remember seeing guys ripping on funshapes in California, so who knows.

Ha - I'm using reverse psychology on myself: Ive been purposely riding boards with less volume lately, just so it feels better when I switch to the higher volume stuff.  ::)

I hear ya tho, LS - I saw some guys even today on wider, higher volume boards just killing it.
