I was talking to someone today and she asked me what my most favorite recent movie was.  Like, the last movie that I really, honest-to-goodness liked a LOT.  And I couldn't think of any!  Maybe I just go to the movies too much these days, I dunno.  Or maybe it's just that I'm jaded or something.  But I feel like the magic has been drained out of the movies these days.

So I'm just throwing this out there to see what other people think.  What was the last movie you saw that really evoked that feeling of "movie magic"?

U23D, but I don't think that is the kind of movie you meant.

But it sure as hell did WOW me. Every second of every scene. And I HATE modern day U2.

huh... well i saw "speed racer" and loved it. definitely a "bad" movie if things like i dunno, plot... or character development matter to you. but i saw it on IMAX and was totally there for the seizure-inducing, neuron-obliterating, hallucinatory special effects. if you're a CG fan, or even half-way geeky when it comes to that stuff, it's definitely at the cutting edge. funny too, because at times the graphic overload created these stylistic breaks which at times resembled experimental film from the 60s, only everything was super smooth, shiny and so very far removed from the optical and physical manipulations of those early works.

as for "real" movies... saw a lovely little film titled "take out." great contemporary neorealism involving a chinese delivery worker and a debt he has to pay before the night is over. the movie was super low-budget, and the story and acting is very subtle, yet moving enough to think about after it's done. apparently getting good reviews too: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/05/nyregion/05takeout.html

I really enjoyed "Huevos de Oro" (1993), a Spanish film directed by Bigas Luna. Starring Javier Bardem and Benicio del Toro.
Incredible movie, almost Shakespearean!
