To surf or not to surf? 3 months after acl reconstruction?

  • Title kinda says it, as of right now I don't plan on it. I unknowingly tore it and a bit of my meniscus at the end of march skiing, then went skiing in april in colorado (it was fine out there), then got it repaired may 5th. Since then it's been therpy 3 times a week and I feel pretty good. I've been riding m longboard around town without a problem, but with a brace. If I did go in the water I'd wrap an ace bandage around it. It's not really unstable without a brace though. I would only go out in gentle surf and not do anything too stressful. It's my back foot that's hurt, and I kinda ride more with my front foot (due to skateboarding). I can swim decently, but both leg muscles are weaker than what they used to be due to all the laying around I've been doing. I'm only 18, so I have youth on my side. I can do pop ups on dry land with little or no pain.

The thing is, I don't surf in the winter and I didn't have a suit for spring, so that puts my time out of the water at around 11 months! That's nearly a sin. I'm going off to college this saturday, so that raises two questions. Anybody have any experience with this injury/situation? Cause time is running out. And how warm is the water at the end of september, when I may be a bit more fit to get out there? Obviously this is hard to answer over the internet and the ultimate decision is mine, but any advice? Like I said, I'm leaning towards no. One time isn't worth the risk, even if it is one time of surfing.

  • ahhh...i wouldn't, personally, but your recovery/mindset seems to be drastically different than mine was 3 months post-op.  definitely didn't trust it then, wasn't doing much but rehabbing it.  think i was still trying to get it to move naturally while i was going down stairs at that point, probably not even running yet in rehab.

i've found surfing to be more worrisome than sports actually.  there are so many slight knee twists when you pop up, turn, crouch, flop back on your board when you kick out, etc.

  • I didn't go out, the waves were actually nice looking. They were a bit big for my circumstances though and there was a rather strong current too. I was about to ask one of my friends to try one of their boards but i didn't. I think I made the right choice.

Edit: I did go out today (friday) and there were absolutely no waves. I kinda just paddled around and made an attempt to catch a few. At least I got in the water. Off to college!
