  • after 2 sesssions yesterday I could barely lift my left arm out of the water. Couldn't paddle for longer than seconds before it really started to hurt, which made the paddle out duck diving yesterday agonizing.

I think it's my rotator cuff. I hurt it skating a few years back, and being the idiot that I am, never went to physical therapy. The kicker is that my GF at the time was an effing physical therapist so I could  Yes, I am a moron.

I think I have to see an orthopedist and quit effing around. Any reccomendations for a doc?

  • Here's a recommendation: STOP GETTING HURT! Dude, if it's not someone's board hitting you in the noggin', it's something else...hahahahaha.

No recommendations for a doc, except don't jump gun - give it a few days if you can, see what happens with a little rest and let the inflammation go down, and explore your alternatives, including yoga, which shocked me at how well it worked out for me when I had some issues.

Of course in time, absolutely get it checked out by qualified medical professionals if need be, but allowing some time for the swelling to resolve a bit often aids the docs in getting accurate views with the diagnostic tools.

    Good luck, and feel better!!

  • you know, you could try a chiropractor that is trained in active release technique. this is a chiro who does more than just regular adjustments, but also works with soft tissue - ligaments and muscles. i recently had an issue with some back and leg pain - very unusual for me. turns out it was an underlying misalignment of some bones that i've had for awhile, but never really picked up on. after a couple of treatments which included re-alignment as well as working through surrounding ligaments and tendons i was totally back to normal. yoga, if anything aggravated the condition, so it was good to get the underlying problem taken care of. (i just did a yoga session today and felt great - totally 100% better.) there's no telling what the underlying problem is for you, but it's something to look into, which i initially hadn't considered for myself.

  • First put ice on it. Second make a dr appt. and then start PT. My left shoulder is messed up too. My right is healed but now my left was acting up so since I was in PT for my leg anyway, I had her look at my shoulder and we are working on it. After almost a month I almost have my full range of motion back and now we are strength training it and reprogramming the muscles btw my shoulder blades to ACTUALLY work. Strength btw the shoulder blades is key to keeping those shoulders happy. Look at the other thread about shoulders-it takes 3 months to reprogram the muscles, then you can start strength training. Go now or it will freeze up and just keep getting worse. The sooner you o the sooner you're back in the water.

  • My right shoulder seems to get tweeked out every so often. I keep sleeping on it wrong and the bag I carry may or may not have bricks sewn into the lining.
Rest, Ice (or Tiger Balm), and Advil seems to do the trick.

duh, i know your mom is a good chiro, but she doesn't do the muscle manipulation that i am looking for. i'm down with acupuncture, if i had more free hours in the week. i need a good program to prevent injury, and i believe that developing the right muscles and keeping them flexible are the best steps. i only call you a retard cause you are a retard.

so, i want to look into the guys that lotusb and theusername are going to.... please send PMs - gracias.

  • hey snaggle, i'll send you the info of the chiro i go to, but he's in park slope, which may be a bit of a distance to cover. basically any chiro trained in ART (active release technique) would be good for you. i notice lotusb's physio place also uses ART. it really works!

  • I posted about my shoulder issue first it was the right and now the  left. I have been going to the Pt for about a month for my shoulder and  she gave me exercises that were really amazing that I have been doing  almost religiously and knew I was coming to Costa Rica where I am now.  First of all, every night I went to bed my shoulder was killing me and kept working it out. Since I've been here I've only ridden short boards  which have really helped since you have to keep your shoulders back and  going to yoga in the heat is amazing. And brought bungee straps to do my  shoulder exercises, which honestly I did twice --what I'm trying to say  after 3 glasses of wine is--my shoulder feels great.Do your exercises if you need me to show you them I will.
