Well, the Sea Sheperds are back in the news with another collision, this time off Antarctica. - Here's the story:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100206/ap_on_re_as/as_antarctica_whaling

An excerpt from the link above:

"The U.S.-based activist group Sea Shepherd, which sends vessels to confront the Japanese fleet each year, said the Japanese ship deliberately rammed the Bob Barker — named after the U.S. game show host who donated millions to buy it for the anti-whaling group.

However, Japan's Fisheries Agency said the activist boat caused the collision by suddenly approaching the harpoon vessel No. 3 Yushin Maru to throw bottles containing butyric acid in an attempted attack on the Japanese ship.

The Japanese agency accused Sea Shepherd of "committing an act of sabotage" on the Japanese expedition, noting that it is allowed under world whaling restrictions as a scientific expedition. Conservationists call the annual hunt a cover for commercial whaling.

"We will not tolerate the dangerous activity that threatens Japanese whaling ships and endangers the lives of their crew members," it said in a statement late Saturday."

Are these guys accomplishing anything? I have my opinion...and it's not great - but I'm curious what you guys think...vote in the poll and post up your thoughts!

  • Go Sea Sheperd! Of course they are helping, by whatever other ideas and standrads they are actually in reality directly stopping whaling.

    See this:
    http://www.care2.com/c2c/share/detail/306350

Sea Shepherd Founder and President Captain Paul Watson, one of the co-founders of Greenpeace is appalled at the pro-whaling stance of Greenpeace. "This campaign is just simply bizarre," said Captain Watson, "How does Greenpeace think they are going to stop whaling in Antarctica by publicly eating whale meat and declaring whale meat to be delicious? What are these people thinking?" This is not the first time that Greenpeace has betrayed the whales. In 1997, they assisted in a Yupik whale hunt by towing a dead bowhead whale ashore and ate whale meat as guests of the community.Greenpeace International Director John Frizell has openly stated that Greenpeace is not opposed to whaling in principle.

GP is under pressure for a recent corporate "green" hire in Canada of Tzeporah Berman too, a green hack.

I agree they are doing what it takes to get awareness about whats going on in the Souther Ocean out to the world. Sometimes Actions Speak Louder than Words.

What they do wouldnt make the US look good or bad anyways cause they Fly a Denmark flag on there ship anyways. I rember them saying something about that during the second season of Whale Wars
I don't wanna be a star. Have my picture in magazines, have a bunch of kids looking up to me. I'm a drunk, Bear, a screw up. I just surf cause its good to go out and ride with your friends. I don't even have that anymore.

  • One of these days they're going to crash into a whaling boat and kill themselves. That'll be really productive.
CAUTION: Contents under pressure. May cause irritation. Keep away from children. Do not expose to extreme heat or cold.
    Wash thoroughly after handling.

  • what they are doing is not safe at all.  regardless of who is technically at fault in these situation, you should avoid a collision at sea at all costs.

when they get home and crash their hybrid into a family in a gas guzzling SUV, would that be considered productive?.
