I know for most this is old by now but my office has been pretty stable until today. General Growth Properties was a major client, their bankruptcy put the nail in the coffin. 10% layoffs, 10% salary cut, Switch to budget healthcare provider. More to come after a wait to see how this shakes out.  Needless to say I'll be keeping my head below the cubicle wall.

Thanks for the advice and optimism, time to pay some attention to linked in, clean up facebook, network, etc. Being the insurance provider of the family, can't be too careful. Been trying to land a huge private gig for masterplanning a Jamaican eco resort/spa, its a big fish we'll see if I can boat it in the next few months.

First I learn that our tenant is moving out of our basement apartment, now I just found out I did not make it through today's 30% cut. How does one begin to collect unemployment checks? got to keep the cash flow going to pay wifey's cancer bills =(

mine got turned around and i had a check in about 2 weeks after i filed. it will also depend on severance, if you are owed time for unused vacation etc.
 
cobra is very expensive but sounds like it might be your best option if your wifes medical bills were being covered. companies are being forced by the government to cover more of the cobra expense so hopefully that is your case. i was sent a partial refund after paying out a small fortune to keep cobra going because i had a few procedures done at the derm and was concerned about A. not having insurance or B. the new insurer not covering the procedures.
 
Best of luck and try to keep your head up.  There will be opportunities, just have to keep your eyes open.  It took me awhile to find something else, but i couldnt be happier now.

God dammit. So unfair. I'm so sorry. It's just too much.
 
That you should have to worry about healthcare with a sick family member while criminal banks get bailed out with your taxes so they can lend the money back to you at interest... but then they don't, because they'd rather buy the good banks now that the price is good, because everyone's hurting... hurting because of the criminal banks. Meanwhile, we spend billions upon billions for corrupt, no-bid corporations to build mega-bases in Iraq and Afghanistan where I guess the ever-growing ranks of the unemployed can at least go to get killed or maimed to support their families--who still won't get decent healthcare out of the deal.
 
I'm just so fed up and disgusted with all the lies and corruption and destruction and what it's doing to decent people who didn't do a damn thing to anyone but pay their taxes and save for retirement and college or a better life in triple-A rated "safe" funds that got ripped off.
 
America has been raped in the face, the dominoes keep falling, one into another... and I just don't see it getting better.
 
I'll be praying for you, your family, and everyone. God help us all.

I've had a rough year. I wasn't working much, my wife is leaving me for no reason, etc, etc. I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. We're all in this together and life is not as great as it once was. We just have to deal with it and move on. Good luck.
