Summer Layoffs?

  • Saw in another thread that someone else got laid off recently. Me: Art Director, middling web media co. 3 years with them. 3rd re-org in the last year. Position was "terminated." I lasted longer than I thought I would.

Seeing this as an opportunity, not a setback. Hoping to make this turn out in my favor.

    Anyone else felt the pinch?

  • I usually get laid off every winter. Road construction is seasonal for the most part.
Problem is I left a company of 7 years for a new company that promised more work. I have only been working there for 3-4 months and already they ran out of work. There saying 3 weeks and we'll be back but now looking back it was all lies from the beginning.

I'm not sure what to do. Do I go back to school? Problem with that is even educated people are having a hard time. I'm thinking welding school. Good money and I can pretty much be my own boss.

I also want to open up a shop of a certain type but don't have the financial backing at the moment. We'll see what happens.

I'm going to enjoy my rare summer time off. I hate summer though so it might be hard.

  • I was working a graphic design desk job for the past three years. Web development company. Never had a great rapport with management. They tend to be too hands-on and distrustful of anyone that didn't toe the company line. Budgets have been getting tightened. My immediate superior got let go a few months ago, and she said to me that I should watch my can, too. Polished off the portfolio and resume at that point.

I am feeling confident about the market. As nice as it feels to not have any immediate things to do, surfing for 3 hours this morning like I haven't done in some time, I have a son and my GF and I are house-hunting, so I am anxious to get back in the saddle.

If anyone hears of an opening for an Art Director with extensive web/print/mobile experience, let me know!
