  •   I was lucky enough to score a session I never thought would happen on the east coast, the illusive one wave thigh burn.  I waited for a few swells to pass so as not to be obvious about the conditions that culminated and the resulting surf.  Leading up to the day, I didn't have high hopes and, as I expected the wind was hard and had some side shore to it.  Made a few calls, and friend and myself decide to check a spot that we thought might handle the conditions.  Upon getting there we were pretty shocked.  Not a soul out, extremely hard offshores, and overhead waves peeling off further then we could see.  The current though, was absurd, and we could tell just by watching that the water was moving faster than anyone could possibly paddle against.  Between the wind and the current, we weren't too sure if we could actually surf the best waves we had ever seen.  After watching a few familiar faces roll up and get a couple unbelievable waves (some of the better surfers on long island), we decided to give it a go.  I only managed to get a handful of waves due to the current, wind, and approaching sunset.  Each wave however, was better than any wave I have surfed, including my travels to the Caribbean and Central America.  I can't count up the amount of in-outs on my last wave before dark, but I also can't shake off the stoke of knowing all the time and passion I've put in to being a surfer in New York pays off every once a while.  Today as I was day dreaming at my desk, I realized that although fickle as hell, there are not many places in the world that you can consistently score empty surf with just a few friends, with a few fleeting moments of perfection.  Add to that being within sight (on a clear day) of one of the worlds most lively cities, and I'm starting to embrace being a New Yorker, a fact that I have often been bitter about in the past, more and more.  So put that move west on hold, for now I'm pretty damn happy to be right here.

  • Nice! I love surfing here. It's a trade off between consistency and empty, amazing waves. Now is the time of year where i start to hope for an extra body or two in the line up. this morning it was just me and onefin. same thing last week, mid-week. We get such good waves here, too. Just not often enough to keep us satisfied.
