We're asking EVERYONE'S help in this - please email the petition link to anyone and EVERYONE you can think of - and we are interested in every and ANY sponsors we can get - ask them to email me at webmaster@NYNJSurf.com, and I will add their website, media outlet or company to the Sponsor and Link lists!!!!

NYCWO is setting up a domain for portal website to serve as a focal point for this effort. As soon as it propagates, we'll set it up and add links to all sponsors, as well as links to airlines with reasonable baggage fee policies.

Here's the text of the petition:

Surfers travel the world over in search of waves. Like everyone else, surfers also travel for business, family and a variety of other leisure pursuits. Yet Delta Airlines has taken a position that makes a huge distinction: Travel with a surfboard and you will pay, and pay dearly.

Direct from the Delta Airlines website, as of August 29, 2008 is the following:

One item of surfing equipment is accepted as baggage for $175 (for travel within the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico) and $300 (for travel outside the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico).

Simply put, traveling with 2 boards to a surf destination could cost you $1200 round trip, likely far in excess of the price of a seat on the very same plane.

We are also keenly aware that on the very same web page, it is clear that golf bags, skis and snowboards travel free, clearly indicating that Delta is acting in a discriminatory manner towards surfers.

Further, Delta stands in stark contrast with other airlines such as Qantas, JetBlue, Southwest and others which treat surfers traveling with surfboards fairly.

We, the undersigned members of the surf community, are united against these outrageous and discriminatory fees.

We will use our collective voice through this petition and every other means necessary to let Delta and other airlines know that we will NOT fly Delta for ANY reason, business or pleasure, unless and until these discriminatory fees are changed.

- Airlines that target my hobby, surfing, will no longer be in the mix when scheduling air travel for my professional and personal travel. I will fly with others that treat the wave riding community without discrimination.

- I will not fly Delta again until this changes and I will tell everyone I know, including a lot of friends that live in Delta hubs of Atlanta and Salt Lake City.

- goodbye Delta and hello Jet Blue

- This is discrimination, unfair and unjust what you are doing at DELTA to us surfers. Please make surfboards are classified as the same as golf clubs and snowboards, or YOU WILL LOSE MY BUSINESS !!

- That no insurance or protection of any kind is offered for this fee, 300$ is totally outragous and without merrit! While golf clubs continue to travel for free for the wealthy, how can you increase the cost of surfboards for the not so wealthy average surfer!

- D=Doing E=Everything to L=Limit T=Travel A=Abroad Boycott Delta!!

- The unfairness of this policy is always evident when I go to pick up my surfboard in the airport. My 5 foot 10 inch board weighs seven pound. But I get charged 100 buck. The guy with the 50 pound golf bag goes free. The six-foot skiis are free too.

- Upon receipt of this petition, whereas we had tentative plans to fly Delta or Continental to Europe next month, I have directed my travel agent to use a European airline and NOT Delta or any of its code share partners. This discriminatory practice MUST cease; I know that Delta/codeshare partners will attempt a remedy by charigng for golf clubs and then all hell will break loose. Unfortunately, we (as surfers) have been an easy target to discriminate against--until now. Please let me know if/when I may assist with formal picketing at a major airport nearby. I would LOVE to get the media involved and have the capability to do so, if we choose to organize beyond this petition.

i just went to central america for a month and american charged 120usd to put my boards on the plane. Mexicana air is amazing witch charged me nothing to bring my boards back and gave me free beer and whatever else i wanted for free.. fly mexicana if you can.. i love them ....

Great info, Calmer!! Thanks for the feedback....we're DEF going to need to approach Delta with facts like this, about which airlines ARE treating us fairly...and then do those airlines the courtesy and spread the word to all surfers.
