... I'm trying to take something the wave hasn't given me yet.

that's quite a nice way of putting that. it really is about what the wave gives, or doesn't...

Except when you see guys ripping gutless shin high waves, so apparently it can be done, but it may not be for us mortals.

interesting. i read that much more philosophically. guys who can rip gutless surf just make more out of what's given.

I was definitely trying to mimic the shin-high rippers lol....I think I may be overstepping my skill boundary Tongue

I have noticed that at some point on the small wave scale these guys are not carving so much anymore as just sort of flipping there board around.

Ok...so this is what I was looking at when I was looking for a new board last summer...didn't end up getting this board but look what this guy is doing on these tiny gutless waves.  Obviously he's pretty damn good, but this is sort of what I'm aspiring to for waves like this

yeah, small... but remember probably longer period groundswell and at a really nice (near perfect) point setup. even tiny waves with a long period have kick and can be way more fun than bigger, but scrabbly windswell.

Yeah having never been out west I haven't really had the experience of that.  I gotta get out to CA sometime
