  • so i just got my new set of fcs fg-7s in the mail. (no local places i tried to get in touch with had em in stock and they are backordered at fcs so it was quite a adventure finding em) first impression is that they are ridiculously light can't wait to give em a go on my frocket. 8)

  • I had them in my small wave thruster a ways back. I wound up riding them a lot with a smaller center fin or a little trailer. Liked the drive from them, but a lot of times it was just too much fin, and I like a lot of fin as I prefer to surf with power than flicky little turns.

    Kyle

  • Tried smaller fins on my frocket and they just didn't work. The same fins are sick on my firewire. The tail is a lot wider on the frocket which needs more fin and needed to b  tightened  up a bit using the bigger fin. Gave the m-7 fins a try and they worked better then the smaller fins(k2.1 pc) so I wanted to try the fg series which are supposed to have better drive and response

  • Usually around 170-180, I had them on a 6'0 wider summer type shortboard.

it's interesting, i've been trying some smaller fins in my frocket and i'm not connecting with it as well as i was before. i thought it was just my surfing, or the waves, either way, something felt off. i'm going to switch back to my FYUs to see if that makes a difference. i think i like to feel a little more drive from the board, and i'm just not getting it.

  • Smaller fins in relatively smaller waves will really make you feel like you have no drive. That extra surface area creates lift and really helps to generate speed in our often less than perfect surf.

ahhh... that's good to know. thanks. i'm definitely going back to the YUs, then. when will i like the smaller fins? the first time i tried them, i paddled out on my frocket at salt creek. it looked like a mellow wave, then i caught a couple and the pics i got back, it was pretty solid and a much more powerful wave than i expected. i don't think i liked the fins in that wave, either, but it could have been that i was too undergunned on the frocket, regardless of fins. so curious how to think about the right fins in different conditions?

  • Smaller fins are better when the wave itself, whether due to wave or shape creates most of your speed (vs. you pumping and working the wave). That said I tend to ride a lot bigger template most of the time. As of late I've been loving my Tknox template for lokbox (I rock JC1's in my futures stepup though). There is a good amount of fin in the Tknox template for obvious reasons, I'm not that big, but I like to pretend I surf like Taylor haha.
    Peace,
    Kyle

  • thanks. i'm sort of developing my tastes and my style. it's hard to know what's the fins, what's the board, and what's the conditions, and what's just me. i might have to bring a couple sets of fins out on one session and experiment to see if they really do feel that different. i think that i like the YUs - they are made for lighter riders, but are still not too small.

on a separate note, i wonder if learning on a quad has effected my tastes. i felt like my quad-fish was a board you really used more leg strength on. going to a thruster, at first i felt off because it was so easy to turn and i didn't have to muscle as much. i should try out my old quad one of these days, just to feel the difference.

    thanks for the info

  • Yea I know what you're saying about the quad to thruster thing. I just started riding thrusters again as I think I've progressed back to them somewhat (kinda sad to say but I used quads as a crutch at first). That said I ride the same fins in the front on my quads as I would as my sides in a thruster.

    Kyle

  • snaggle small fins on the frocket are terrible. board feels like it barely moves.. the same fins on my firewire go great.. i put a large template fin the 7 series on, and the frocket really moves now.. but now i loose a lot of the looseness that made the board so fun.. this weekend if there's waves i'm going with the fg-7s on the side and with the k2.1pc trailer and see how it goes.. the k2.1s all around did not work, board was sooo loose but had very little drive.  i wish i didn't have oven mitts on and i'd be able to switch out mid session and really compare fin combinations and see what i like most

edit: i just realized i'm repeating myself ha.. anyways i'll let you know how the big side smaller trailer combo works

that was what onefin suggested - big side smaller trailer. i don't know the fcs fins at all, but the futures ones i had in before were great. i thought it was a good combo of drivey but loose. well, i hope i can try to switch it up tomorrow  :D
