  • hahaha, no.

your easiest bet would be to get a surftech nugg but they don't have them in normal sizes (smallest is 6'6, nuggs for normal sized surfers are usually ridden under 6 feet)...and it is also a surftech

if you want poly, the east coast rep is a guy by the name of noel in florida.  check his site here: www.solosurfer.com.  email: babag123@aol.com.  they'll be shaped by geoff himself, not his protege darren rogers, and come right out of byron bay.  i spoke to him about changing shipping companies so his rates might be cheaper now but prepare to pay.

the alternative option is to get a nugget shape from steve forstall or ricky carroll, both of who have shaped mccoy-esque boards for cheyne horan.  their boards are also featured on noel's webby and are substantially cheaper.  you could get a carbon fiber nugg wanna-be from one of them for less than one from geoff.

they're really meant to be ridden as single fins (weird ones with knuckles) but geoff will throw twinnies or thrusters on them.  they also look really weird in person--short, fat, big wide rounded tail, what looks like a wok (convex) on the bottom tail fin cluster--but the combination of that tail and bottom contour combine to provide surprisingly great handling in steep hollow waves.  they're renowned for tube riding ability.

  • I'm intrigued by the surftech ones, seem kinda thick though they list the 6'6" as 2 7/8" thick....aren't surftech boards corky like epoxies? I've had those from Flyshaper and they were great but I like them thinner than I would have my regular boards.
I go 2 1/4" with epoxy and 2 1/2" with regular glass job.

  • I'd love to get a poly Nugget.  I really think that shape would suit my surfing style.  I say that, as I do a lot of things, having no experience whatever with them.

Yeah I was surfing right next to him for a while....kind of what got me started on this.
Also I checked the design and it's a bit similar to my Waterskate, though wider in the tail.
Woody's surf shop in Shirley has a 6'6" that sounds exactly like the one Tip was riding. Jeeeez He was
tearing.....I looked at one of the barrell photos of him by SP and noticed the thickness of that thing.
Would probably be a killer Winter board for here, 2 7/8" thick Surftech? Think it would float me?  :D

  • they are really thick and really round...really odd looking boards, which gives them alot of appeal to me, lol.  saw one surftech one and it seemed like the complexity/height of what geoff refers to as the 'loaded dome' was reduced.

  • A one board quiver in East Coast surf. I have a 7' and it is great in anything from knee to near DOH. Even with the round tail they really drive. You need to know that they're ridden totally off the tail. Step down on the tail and the board accelerates. A little funky but when you get it wired, they're amazing boards. They really do "free your mind". Ben Aipa himself considers him one of the very best in the biz and he don't go in for media hype and marketing.
    Great Boards. I want a pot-belly next.

Is yours the surftech? Is it very thick?  I noticed trhe dimensions on those are still quite thick, like 2 7/8".

  • Greetings...New to the site.  Jersey born and bred.  Live in MD now.  Still frequent NJ to surf, particularly LBI.  Had the good fortune of being there (in Beach Haven) a couple weekends ago.

    From Geoff's website (www.mccoysurfboards.com):

"In 1994, I decided to redesign surfboards, that is, to make boards which were more practical and functional for a wider range of surfing conditions and abilities...The Nugget, which has evolved over my many years of design, is the end result of my almost forty years experience and thinking about what a surfboard should be....Extra thickness for paddling power and speed...Full plan shape for consistent speed and flow...Area tail for greater maneuverability and drive...The Nugget designs incorporate the loaded dome bottom contours which is a blend of curves thgroughout the bottom of the board..which neutalizes reaction giving greater control..."

I highly recommend the Nugget.  I have had Geoff shape me four of 'em ranging from 6'4" to 9'2" all single fin. I got 'em through Noel at www.solosurfer.com.  He is a great guy to work with and I know he is getting close to having a shipment from AU ready soon.  I also have a 7' Surftech that is part of my quiver I keep in a keep in FL.  I was first turned on to the Nugget through the Surftech model.  [BTW, I saw someone with a ST nugget in LBI on Sat Oct 15, which was a bit of a surprise.]  I Just replaced the 7' ST with one of the Cheyne nuggets that Noel has recently started doing with Ricky Carroll. A fellow Nugget acolyte in CA who ordered the Ricky Carroll shape from Noel and Ricky has been raving about his new board.   [If you are looking for the most cost effective alternative or are not into Surftech's (though I would highly recommend the ST Nuggget) the Ricky Carroll shape is probably the most affordable alternative of the three.]  Finally get it give the new Cheyne a try when I head down there in Nov.

Some very good threads on the Nugget in the archives at Swaylocks.

  • I spoke with Geoff a couple of days ago to get a quote on shipping.  It's like $1200 for three boards.  very expensive and nugget orders from Oz are pre pay or large non refundable deposit.  I have not had any bad luck yet, but a few minor dings and DHL sucks for showing up on time.   Mccoy uses TNT exclusively now.  There is also a paypal charge and packing charge to contend with.   The Horans are accurate representations of what Cheyne was riding in the mid eighties and early ninties and they have been modernized to a degree.

Pautshy is a great guy and great shaper, but you will wait at least 5 months for a board.  I have delt with Greg for fifteen years.
