Placing a tail pad*

After todays humbling experience  (first real day back on a shortboard after the back/disc injury issues)
I have found that I probably need a tailpad on the new/used Anderson poacher I aquired. (Thanks NJLongboarder heal up fast)
Its 6,6 with a window maker set up so the fins are sort of in odd spots compared to a regular thruster.
Im definetely a front foot orientated as well

Where does one locate it? (And dont say on the tail ya nutsack)
Im going to surf the board a few more times without it just so that I can really tell where my feet should be.

*((I know it does not make sense but I hate tail pads, just so ugly the way they break up the nice lines of a board))

I love tailpads, addicted to them. They let me know where my foot is visually {peripherally, I don't actually look down} and physically.

Anyway, the big thing I would say figure out if you are EVER going to need to plant your foot ALL THE WAY BACK on the tail for a hard turn or manuever. I know we have different syles and I ride standard thruster setups exclusively, but if you decide that you usually put your back foot forward of the tail most of the time and place the pad by that rational, you may find yourself trying to do a hard snap or turn sometime and falling off the board. I put them all the way back, just about as far as it can go. Then I usually surf with my foot on the front of the pad {or even in front of it sometimes}, but definitely end up with it jammed against the flipped up part of the pad at times for a turn. I have no idea how your fin setup feels or works, but on average with a thruster setup I find my back foot anywhere from right over the side fins, to between the sides and the trailer. Your center fin is bigger so your foot might need to be further back.... of course you may never want to crank the board around hard but that's something for you to suss out. Hope that helps.

PS putting a pad on too far forward and finding out you need to move your foot back and getting stopped by the flipped up end part of the pad.....bad. I did that. Had to remove a pad and replace it.

PPS I like black or at least grey tailpads because I think I can peripherally spot them better and they don't get disgusting like a white or light colored one.

PPPS A lot of pads have arches in them. I have flat feet and don't like this so I get the ones with little or no arches. That's something you might check out cuz I think it feels really weird to have farcking arch support on a surfboard to me. Considering you don't use pads before this you might find it unnerving to have this thing in the middle of your foot.

Does give one's foot some purchase on the board.

If you need a pad, I have an extra you can have (I bought a bunch off of WM when they were selling the panchos). Perhaps a barter can be arranged where I give you a tail pad in exchange for you soldering the cable jack on my geetar?

PS. The hotspot on any shortboard is right over the fins and that's where the tailpad goes.
I generally find the leash plug and put it around there.

PSS: Duckdiving with a tail pad after not having one is like going from lacquer 78 to compact disk.
PSSS: Been listening to a Kak-inspired radio station on Pandora all afternoon. Rock and roll is the stuff!

I've never had a tailpad, but crackie makes it sound like going from a laquer 78 to a CD is a good thing.  It's not.  Technology is not your friend.  Sorry, I've got nothing to add here.  None of my "short" boards have a tail pad.  I should try one.  Ironically, the Phillips longboard (you know the one) that my sis and I bought from Xavier has a tailpad.  I'm ashamed to admit it, but I kind of like it.

I just wanted to chime in here and say that that trade was the deal of the century.  You made out, my man.

Wish I could grab a surf with y'all this weekend, but I've got in-laws in town.  Looking hopeless.

Yeah was wondering about that comparison myself....especially from Crackie.
You should try a tailpad on your shortboards Bubba, it'll help with your tailslides and airs  Grin
