No avalanche is not a snow avalanche, its a spot in an awkward location I haven't attempted to surf yet and it may be accessable by stand up?

Yes, I know, YM.

But there's a famous big wave in Haleiwa by the same name. The mysto spot in NY
was probably named after the Hawaii wave by a serviceman at Ft. Tilden who was based in Hawaii and
saw the wave off Breezy. Not sure but I have heard that story from different sources.

The massive left wall in the pics on the above web site shows a couple shots of it.
It's the wave Blane Chambers and Derek Agaron are surfing. A truly amazing wave.
It's a deep water left that just jacks up really tall when the water hits the shelf. On truly
big days it breaks out by a buoy outside Haleiwa harbor about 3/4 of a mile offshore-when
it's like that, it's tow-in surfing only.

If I had the money I'd get one.  I was only on one once...I stood up ok but it took me about 50 yards to turn the dang thing around.  Needless to say I didn't catch any waves.  But I'd love to get one to paddle around on the flat days.  What a workout...and fun!

I used to day dream in Kingsborough Community College and look out at the "avalanche" breaking off the point, I always wanted to surf there. the current over there is crazy, one time I got grounded in a sail boat and the coast guard had to come pull us out!
Pretty interesting story about the guy stationed in Ft. Tilden from Hawaii calling the spot avalanche. Avalanche is pretty far from Ft. Tilden.

Thre's a thread on the other surf site which goes into the spot's lore and history. Very interesting. That's where I heard about the guy at Ft. Tilden back in the 60's. It didn't say that the guy
SAW the wave break while on duty or not. Apparently this guy brought back some boards from Oahu
with him and scoured the area for surf and came across the mysto break which reminded
him of the Hawaiian break "Avs".
Personally, I've never even seen the NY spot much less surfed it(although I've caught some of the
biggest waves of my life at the Haleiwa Avalanches).
If you needed a rescue in a sailboat, an SUP would not be a viable option out there. You'd need
a jet ski more than likely if things get hairy.

Sea Cliff, just do it. You'll be stoked.

I always thought that they called it Avalanche because from Brooklyn it always looked like giant white wash, like tumbling snow.
Its weird the most popular spot in R*ck, never really got a steady name, although the semi-popular spot next door got a steady name.
