Yes, I know, YM.
But there's a famous big wave in Haleiwa by the same name. The mysto spot in NY
was probably named after the Hawaii wave by a serviceman at Ft. Tilden who was based in Hawaii and
saw the wave off Breezy. Not sure but I have heard that story from different sources.
The massive left wall in the pics on the above web site shows a couple shots of it.
It's the wave Blane Chambers and Derek Agaron are surfing. A truly amazing wave.
It's a deep water left that just jacks up really tall when the water hits the shelf. On truly
big days it breaks out by a buoy outside Haleiwa harbor about 3/4 of a mile offshore-when
it's like that, it's tow-in surfing only.
I used to day dream in Kingsborough Community College and look out at the "avalanche" breaking off the point, I always wanted to surf there. the current over there is crazy, one time I got grounded in a sail boat and the coast guard had to come pull us out!
Pretty interesting story about the guy stationed in Ft. Tilden from Hawaii calling the spot avalanche. Avalanche is pretty far from Ft. Tilden.
