Its my 10 anniversary in october and we are going away for a week without the kids for the first time in what I care to remember. Im looking for a really plush place (we are not "fancy" people but this is a big anniversary) that has surf (doesn't have to be epic waves with consequence, just something consistent and fun).

a few random things i'm looking for:

a) minimimal travel from airport and less then 6 hours of flying
b) top notch hotel/spa (along the lines of ritz, 4 seasons)
c) consistent waves and weather in october

I'm thinking rincon, costa rica, or the dr, but having never been to any of them not sure what places fit that criteria. We went to maui for our honeymoon and that would be perfect, just to far) I just got the green light, so gotta strike while the iron is hot. Thanks!

france

the minute i saw the title of the thread, i thought france. although, it's more than 6 hours flying time. beware of the ritz in san juan, puerto rico - it has bed bugs.

costa rica in october would suck. there's the Ritz at Laguna Niguel in California, although not exotic is a nice place to stay and you should get waves. Still think France would be the best bet, though

Madeira, or The Azores in general or The Canaries. A few Resort Chains have pretty opulent places. Check Iberostar.com, or RIU.com, bith have resorts all over the world. All-Inclusives are the norm.

we didn't find that much lix in the canaries, but that's my wife and that was awhile ago.  Also, you'd wanna check that the actual surf spots are within reach of the good resorts which i could see not being the case in that area.

later in december but before the holidays, CR could work. you should have nice offshores most of the time and will be out of the rainy season

Barbados!

platinum coast hotels that are so swanky, your wife will be happy to let you hop accross the island to Soup Bowls...

I stayed here...not too crazy richy....but they have those kinds of places there as well

i'd also suggest ireland though you've got the same exchange problem and a little chilly.  California maybe.  Mexico.  The six hour flight restriction is tough.  If you're looking for consistency, you're wanting the eastern shore of an ocean.  Wife will probably want some warmth.  Within 6 hrs, that basically puts you in w. europe or SoCal down through mexico.  All of which have some fancy schmancy resorts here and there.

Spots outside your range would be s.america, indo, maldives, australia, etc. etc.  Many of those places will stretch your dollar a lot father esp. asian countries linked to USD.  Personally, I'd suck it up and get on a plane for the extra hours.  I almost always think it's worth it.  I mean by the time you pack, get to the airport, check-in, sit on the tarmac, unload, wait for your bags/board, etc.. the actual flight time is insignificant imho.

Iceland = empty lineups and one of the few places in Europe where the dollar has become stronger against the local currency (20% in the last year). Then you have perks like the natural hot springs, geysirs and waterfalls, northern lights, midnight sun and exploring the glaciers. All only a 5 hour direct flight from JFK.
