Well..since we've had great recent threads on shortboard stoke and super longboard stoke, let me complete the cycle here...  Grin

I recently picked up a 7'0" Ricky Carroll mini-longboard for the small summer days...the smallest of the series for RC (range 7'0" to 8'6")..and this weekend provided a perfect opportunity to give it a go.

It's farking GREAT. What a blast, simple to ride, and catches just about anything. Got it set up with a 7" Yater fin, tried it with and without teh sidebites, love it both ways.

Great addition to the quiver for someone who doesnt longboard, but doesnt want to sit out the small days or risk never getting a wave when the lineup is jammed with 9-oh's....

A very under-rated shape in my opinion. You can ride them aggressively with a shortboard approach or ride them with more longboard style. Mine's a 6'8" Aipa double ender quad. Off the tail it's a shortboard. But you can trim and glide longboard style.
SC, you'll get LOTS more waves on those marginal days with that baby. Good acquisition.

 love it both ways.

Excellent points, ed- I have to admit that I was more than a but apprehensive, thinking that it might hurt my shortboarding - 2 rides in and I was absolutely convinced it will do nothing but help.

I would agrgue that riding "more appropriate" boards for different conditions will actually IMPROVE your shortboarding.
1-you'll get more water time/catch more waves which will make someone a better surfer no matter the board of choice.
2-you'll learn a new approach/turn the board with more flow and glide which translates to more fluid shortboarding.
3-you'll ride your shortboard in the right conditions/not sit around trying to surf thigh high waves on a chip.
4-Shhhh. Don't tell any industry types but lots of top shortboarders sneak around on longboards/SUPs and it doesn't seem to bother them(Sunny Garcia has longboarded for years, Tom Carroll and Rob Machado are avid SUPers, even Tom Curren has been known to sneak off for a log session now and then).

Just my humble opinion.

Agree on all points....I'm not always so fast on the pickup, so it took me a while...but i def agree.

Friday June 13th 4:20 PM.

OK who had the date/time in the pool?   I had something like September 2041 as when I expected to hear SC make a statement in support of anything other that a three finned shortboard.

Hahhahahhahaaa..
Except that it DOES have three fins (ok, a longboard fin and two sidebites) and at 7', qualifies by the official rules and regulations of the Eastern Surfing Association as a shortboard.  Tongue Grin
