then we danced around it in a circle.

  • "It is the most natural and non-invasive, non-violent way of giving birth," said Gagnon.

Umm..yeah. That's exactly what I was thinking when my kids were born, I begged the doctors and nurses to please stop the violence.  ::)

In reality, all I can think is this: Leaving the cord intact is just leaving an amazingly good port for bacterial infection.

  • not a "round eye" point of view:

The placenta--or "iewe," pronounced eh-AY-vay --has an important symbolism in Hawaiian culture, and some rebuff the modern medical practice of simply throwing it out. Those practicing the religious and cultural ways of their ancestors explain that, in Hawaii, the burial sites of placentas of their forebears have the same significance as where they are buried after they die.
"The iewe of the newborn child is sacred and must be handled in a sacred manner in order to provide for the physical health of the child," Native Hawaiian historian Lilikala Kameeleihiwa told a state legislative committee considering the new law. "Moreover, the careful disposition of the iewe will indicate how the child will grow up and molds the child's identity."

Native Hawaiians typically "plant" the placenta in the ground following a religious ritual that is kept a closely held secret. Sometimes a tree or bush is planted at the same time. The point, says Kameeleihiwa, a professor of Hawaiian studies at the University of Hawaii as well as a grandmother who has buried placentas of her own descendents, is to bind the child to his or her homeland.

  • hey, i got no problem with thinking a placenta is sacred, or nutritious, or a transmogrified form of a vintage stratocaster for that matter. i even think it might be interesting to have a nibble of a well prepared one. but i stand by my original statement that leaving it attached to the baby and carrying it around til the umbilical cord naturally necroses and breaks off is stupid...and icky.

  • what's so natural about covering it with lavendar flowers and sea salts?  Wouldn't it be even more natural if the mother stuffed it down the front of her (baggy) pants and carried it, as well as the baby, around until the cord fell off non-violently?

It really isn't very natural if you call it sacred and violently bury it is it now (PETD - People For The Ethical Treatment of Dirt - is calling for the end to the brutal practice of hitting dirt with shovels).  Violently harvesting it and storing it away as a future stem cell source for your family is even more unnatural.  American kids need more sheltering from violence and unpleasantness - how else will we create a country filled entirely with entitled, over-coddled, delicate-bodied, perma-brats that we are striving so hard to attain?

  • Hey,

sorry if my attempt at humor was offensive,  what I was trying to do was poke fun at what could be viewed as the  "trendy" birthing practices of my own (round eye) culture.  It usually is the way to mock what we don't understand....besides, I'm a guy who rarely pokes his head up around here- I think this head cold I've got is making me pretty snarky today :)   apologies to all

A very good friend of mine worked in PR for PETA for a long time.  I say that apropos of nothing, just because.  Me, I love bacon.  Lard.  ri-tip.  Beef carpaccio.  Liver and onions.  But not liverwurst.  We're still friends.

  • people think Dirt is just something you walk all over something you kick around not realizing that it is alive, it is our true mother - it is a mother without a mother unlike animals and vegetables who regenerate through seed.  Dirt should not just be something that little 6 year olds hanging out on the sidewalk dare each other to eat anymore - it is scientific fact that meat and vegetables cause all our illnesses - we would be much healthier if we just all just ate dirt.  Please join us in funneling valuable research funding away from scientific advances beneficial to humans and towards the advancement and preservation of Dirt.  We lost Bob Barker's $2.5 mill to PETA (the Price is Wrong Bitch) but we are working hard to land Wink Martindale
