I hope its not temporary... Because that is the money spot for swell forecasting...

Also, it will be interesting to watch long period swells decay as they cross the continental shelf. The possibility's for buoy junkies are endless!!!

  • Stoked. Yeah, that is a great location for monitoring swell for NJ and NY.

The Texas Tower has been a popular dive location for wreck divers. It was a radar platform that sank in '61 after only 3 years use. 28 men died when it collapsed in a January storm.

Wow, unreal. So it must be on the very tip of the continental shelf then.

The tip of the shelf is known as the continental 'break' or 'edge' and is approx. at 100 fathoms (600 feet) off the northeast coast. The Texas tower is in about 180 feet of water with the debris reaching 130 feet below the surface, so it is not really on the edge of the shelf.

  • I thought the person from NOAA I spoke to last year said they were going to give swell and wave direction on all the new buoys. This is a big over site by them. It would be so much better to predict the good ground swell when it is coming. Or should I say confirm. It is about time they replaced 44004 though it is not as far off the coast. This is a great spot for the new buoy. Thanks for letting us know TC.

  • TC, You will be able to test the decay on the ground swell that is forming between SA and Africa. I was going to give a date but I will let someone else make that decision. Its been a fun four days of surf.

  • Station 44066 has stopped transmitting at 0100Z, 06/26/2009. This buoy will be restored to service when it can be worked into the schedule.  :'(
