You know, I was going to start a thread about creating a
New York Surfers Association, so we, as a conglomerate could have a louder & more defined purpose/voice than say just the Surfrider Foundation.
For instance, having a NYSA group could rally or lobby for offshore reefs made from our humble subway cars that not only can provide an eco culture for fish but also create artificial surfing reefs that can draw in $$'s for local communities.
There are other surfers associations that have done some wonderful things like backing the SOS - Save Our Seas - Surfers Against Sewerage (
www.sas.org.
uk/education/
sos/index.html) initiative in the UK...but then I came across this, where a collective surfers association finally had some clout and got some action going...any thoughts?
Portuguese Surfers Assn negotiating airline board fees Global Surf News, 18 February, 2009 : - The Portuguese Surfers Association actively participated in the outcome of TAP's new rules on boards carriage as we entered into negotiations with the company's top management. It ist still not the ideal solution but it is definetely an improvement from what we had:
* fees are applied to BAGS not boards;
* bags weighting less than 10kg will be charged a 50% discount (say 37,5€ per bag in in Europe) ;
* a responsibility waiver is also necessary
Portuguese Surfers Association be pleased to get (writen) feedback from associates / athletes to see if things go as expected and further changes are necessary. Please send feed back to
direccao@ansurfistas.com Further (good) news are likely to come in the horizon as SATA (Air Azores) will also reduce its fees (currently standing at 50€ per board) and/or create a special charge for surfers travelling to the Azores for the WQS and the Portuguese Nationals expected to take place one week later.
