At the least you can out Billabong for their piracy there. Frankly, no excuse for that kinda BS from such a big company.

  • I have a couple who are regulars at the restaurant, he is a patent and intellectual rights attorney.  I think Bubba also knows somebody in this field, but that is the type of legal advice you will need.   Billabong apparently can now eat a dick, wasnt it enough when they bought xcel and started to make crap wetsuits?  I think a nice email to Gordon Merchant is in order, you may also consider outing Bong on the  SurferMag forum as its widely read by the socal surf industry.

  • good idea onefin

I know Jack McCoy pretty well and have asked for some assistance from him since he & Gordon are best mates...but it's pretty poxy that a conglomerate of this size needs to copy exactly what a puny little business i have puts out

I heard that imitation is a form of flattery, not sure what you call bastards who directly rip off someone else's designs

and lets be fair, I ripped of the I <3 NY design for my benefit, but I did change it around enough, and in every legal sense too based on copyright laws I studied up on.

haven't bought an xcel since before the buyout, is the quality now inferior across the board for their suits?

I spend more time in the water than most, my drylock purchased 1/2/09 will not make it through next season.  300 or 400 bucks for half a season use is bullshit.  The booties and gloves fell apart as well, super lame crap.  My previous xcel lasted 2.5 seasons.

Very disappointed in the gloves - jury is still out on my suits. I just got a 2 mil SS fullsuit that I've been wearing a lot - so far so good - durable, felxible, and no defects that I've identified to date.

On the otherhand, I also purchased their low end 3/2 called the "superlite"...and it's performing like you would expect from a low end suit.  :-\

Sorry for the thread hijack, NYCWO - I have no real legal contacts for you, all I can say is, go after 'em!!

  • yup.... I got the Drylock booties and was been snipping thread as it unraveled every session until I didn't need them anymore. Were freaking exoensive too. Worked ok as far as warmth and seal, but no better than any other booties I've had.
It's no better to be safe than sorry....
