  • Killarney's wave as Photo'ed by Nellie out East possibly as big as famed 3/11 swell . I'll spare you the gratuitous pic of that swell but the west end was also super clean and sick but nowhere near as big as Killarney's east end beach break Pipeline lookalike

True dat, but Killarney wasn't surfing a beach break.....

Hmmmm.....perhaps I've always been mistaken on where that shot was taken...somebody in the know, shoot me a PM.

Thanks - just read it - guess I've been wrong for 4 years about it! No matter. To me, regardless of specific location, it's still right up there with the best waves and photos from our area that Ive ever seen, and likely ever will.

Probably simply fear/survival instinct at work. I know that's what usually kicks in for me. ::)

I think what LN was referring too was that although the shoulder's were a tad smaller, I suspect it was harder to 'shoulder hop' then it would have been to actually taken off closer to the peak? Sometimes when it's big(and especially big and peaky) it might actually be safer to take off in the take off zone than the shoulder. They say this is exactly the case at Tea'hpuoo...Not that I would know ;)

Yeah...all kidding aside, I'm sure he'll come on and clarify, but my feeling was that he was referring to the fact that once the wave was already breaking and freight-training down the line, it would just eat you for lunch and keep going of you tried to jump on board.

When you see the larger version of the image and then you look at the chip he's riding, it becomes even more amazing. How he pulled it off is beyond me...

  • perfect day - i don't think i wiped out once and never got caught inside.

that is awesome to me - as a hacker that never made surfing a priority but grew up on NY beaches and therefore was comfortable (or stupid enough to feel comfortable) with the bigger stuff we get I can't really imagine not spending most of my time rolling around underwater with burning lungs only very occasionally being able to make a drop or two before I call it a day and go home.  I wish I had the skill set to pull off a perfect day but I never really had the time to put in in the past (and don't really intend to in the future) or the money to travel to bigger wave places - and I'm very cool with that, not whining - but kudos to you dedicated guys who can.  Pulling perfect days off like that isn't really something that the casual hacker should expect.

biggest pic i've ever seen.  squan gloria.  85 i think.  biggest i've seen for NYNJ.

I was in the water at a western LI spot for Gloria and I have seen that huge squan shot (that I think you are referring to).  Gloria was an angry bitch (I remember Patty Smith's version of Gloria was well known at that time and it fit) but I don;t rember it any where near the size of that squan shot where I was - this could be due to many things like my faulty memory, timing, angle, bottom setup, etc.  Even though my memory is sketchy - I still remember that late august into september used to be a given  bigger wave time for us here - not so much a given anymore  - I have no stats and at that time was completely ignorant of ocean science (as well as most other things) so I don't know if it is typical rose colored faraway hindsight or reality though - anybody from that time have any facts on those late summer early fall swells of the late 70's/early 80's?

  • man, what i wouldn't give for hurricane bill again. it's the fact that we were pretty much trunking it that sealed it for me. when it's big and COLD, it's just less fun and it's harder to be out so long. and, when it's that big, i only catch about 1 or 2 an hour, sadly.
