  • Yeah that was a tuff day. That & the Rocktober swell were memorable. Good stuff, I could use some of those wavos now for the movie. Haven't have waves like that since I've owned good camera gear. What I wouldnt do to get some swell like that on camera now.

  • i had just moved back to nyc from santa cruz, so was feeling pretty good about myself & thumping days. got humbled real quick. that was the day i got dragged across the rocks. was too tired & not used to wearing so much rubber. got one, then destroyed. got out after my brush with stone.

i'll take a huge point break over huge beach break any day.

  • after all the california pornography, those pics look like a normal day out west... i guess the biggest i've seen it here was the early hours of bill, but i was in LB. i suspect far east saw the biggest of it. i have yet to see the east coast get humongous. i'm torn whether i want to see it or not.

Somebody, anybody please repost the famous Nellie St. Paddy's day shot of Killarney that Dorado mentioned earlier. The day overall wasnt as big as 3/11/04, but that shot has to be as big a wave as any I've ever seen around here. Snags - you must've seen it before, no?

  • 3/11/04 biggest I have ever seen Long Beach.  Had a 6'10 and took one look at it and raced home to get my 8'3 Brewer.  It was farking monstrous, Bill, St. Paddy's, Turkey Day and Nov. 3 of 07 all fail in comparison.  I will say that the St Patty's day swell focused on MTK like few other swell I have ever seen and that I caught bigger waves out East than that day on a combo swell.  Regardless it was big and scary and very empty and I dont recall alot of waves being caught than Frank got impaled on the nose of his gun and I think we all went in?  I think I have some photo's of the swell and maybe one that Nelly took of me.
"Long Beach Rule you cant stand up on a bodyboard." Guillespe.  "I have the rules, it doesn't say that anywhere" me.  "Its our rule, its always been our rule, I make the rules" guillespe.  "Thats not really fair you just made that rule up" me.  "go to the surf beach" Guillespe.  "Wont I get kicked out for ridind a bodyboard" me. "Yes" Guillespe. Damned if I do, Damned if I dont.  We love LB

  • Certainly not March, but big for the locale. Like Dorado, I'm upset I couldn't get the goods on 3-11. So for comparison I have this picture from the Bill swell. It's mid morning and I'm on a 8'6" Gun. Not a hollow wave But i was using every inch of that board to keep up. My wave was several Feet smaller than this beast below for sure.  How much bigger was it out here in the west on 3-11-04?

Welcome to Rockaway.. Now Pick up some litter and go home.

  • i've surfed quite a few good sized swell around these parts and i have to say 3/11 is up there.  Top three in my book i'd say.  Just for the meaty knarliness of her in the morning.  i paddled out at dawn to a way outer break by myself on a 7'6" gun and got hurled into a few heaving bombs.  i hafta say, i wish i had company that morning because i was being extra cautious since i was a mile out to sea and alone.  Anyway, the 4 waves i got were pretty all-time - east coast or anywhere.

Spent the afternoon at a popular spot right where that one pic was taken.  It was pretty damn fun and much more user friendly by 11am or so.  sun came out, settled down a bit, wind nice, i dialed down to a smaller board...  i can close my eyes and remember.

Other top 3 were jan-96 nor'easter and gert - both at mtk.  Both bigger than 3/11.  Gert was just very powerful and training down the line.  a fair number of people made it out, but a lot of 'em weren't jumping over the edge.  a lot of people trying to pick off the shoulders which i can tell you was a mistake.  but when you got the peak right, you could just strap in and take the train to the end of the line.

jan-96 was cold dark dark and kinda spooky, but so clean.  Probably the most perfect big peaks i've seen on the east coast.  Just me and the electrician from hampton bays.  Sick.  I owe that guy for cheering me into some brown trout that i'll remember forever..  that's the only day here that i can say reminded me of surfing sunset.  just that elevator taking you up and up even as you've already popped up and you're still going up and just wondering if you're ever going to make it down that face.  perfect day - i don't think i wiped out once and never got caught inside.  i even enjoyed that it was farking dark and cold.

there's a lot of others - st. paddy, valentines day, feb 5 blizzard, couple other blizzard swells, turkey day, nov 9th swell, rocktober i watched on the cam from a internet cafe in italy argghh, a bunch of cane swells... all of these fall into the second tier.

biggest pic i've ever seen.  squan gloria.  85 i think.  biggest i've seen for NYNJ.  can't leave off halloween '92 in FL though. that was a sick one.

NS is a different animal though.  i can only imagine, but the numbers i've seen up there...

  • I recall that the Rocktober swell was pretty close, but not as long period.

Had my heaviest wipeout that weekend.  I literally washed up on shore vomiting after going thru the rocks at stink.  I learned my limits that day.

  • Killarney's wave as Photo'ed by Nellie out East possibly as big as famed 3/11 swell . I'll spare you the gratuitous pic of that swell but the west end was also super clean and sick but nowhere near as big as Killarney's east end beach break Pipeline lookalike

True dat, but Killarney wasn't surfing a beach break.....
