I want my kids to surf for the love of it. There really is no other pure reason.
Well said.  The competitiveness really gets out of control, and its even worse when its kids.  My 8 year old just "got it" and you can't get her out of the water now.  No more pushes, no more telling her when to go.  All she wants to do is surf by herself.  She was in the water all day the day of the contest here and I asked her if she wanted to join.  She just said "No mommy, I just surf for fun."  and then she paddled back out.  She's a little soul surfer after my heart.  Smiley

Wow..that's sooo great..  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

One of the greatest things ever for me still to this day is to be sitting out there and watch grom paddle for a wave and disappear as he drops into it......then see him reemerge as he goes down the line. Indescribable feeling that never ever gets old....  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

I look forward to actually surfing with him, more or less like surf buddies, SC(Kinda like you and your grom). Sharing waves and stoke.
It'll be some time before my little guy is autonomous but for now, I'll settle for days like today where we head out and tandem belly ride thigh high peelers and I push him into some near the sand and he stands and laughs and says "One more, Dad" and we celebrate with a big chocolate chip cookie before he crashes out in his car seat on the ride home.
This is the real-deal-suck-the-marrow-out-of-life-kine stoke. I'll remember days like this and smile when I'm old and grey and sitting in my rocking chair smoking cheap cigars and listening to Sinatra's "Summer Wind".

Ed, I love kids, and can't wait to have my own, but I'm in no rush....

I really like the fact that even as seldom as it is, I've got two great little balls of energy that I can chill with after a session with you.

The best kind of kid/boat is some one elses, as my dad always said, I'm just glad theres a handful of AWESOME keiki that I have around me at home.

Jimbo, in a few years when I'm barely able to handle the paddle out, Nate and Ray's kid will be dragging my ass out to Hammers and charging while I'm holding back on the shoulder thinking about how I should be working on my golf game instead.
Of this, I have no doubt. Ray's already pegged those two as a second generation tow-in team. We've been foilboarding some lately. You outta hang for a "flat water-ride anything-that-floats" day with us when you get back.

As for Kathryn, she's playful. She busts out allen wrenches and king stances and just giggles where as the little man has more of a hellman's approach to the water. I took him to waist high chuns and belly road a few on the 8' foamie. He said:"Dad, I could see the wave peeling. It was BIG!"
"That's called angling, son. Riding the face of the wave."
"I LOVE angling, dad!"

I was pushing my 8 year old daughter into waves on her sponge this weekend. It was great to see her disappear for a second as the wave blocked my view and then
see her riding all the way up to the sand. She only got flipped over once and even though she was a little freaked, she came back for more.

the boys been coming right along, and last monday we were just chillin on the beach, having gone down there not expecting to surf...and there were these nice little peaky sets coming through over the sand bar. he says, i really wanna try my red board (this little 5'10" kechele), so i grabbed it from the house and brought it down. i was just chillin on the beach with the fam, so he paddled out, ducked under a few waves on the way out (which he had seen and talked about but never done), got outside, spun around, paddled into a wave, popped up, and pumped down the  line.

i just laughed with joy.

Solo session! Nice.

In the "isn't it ironic?" department, I get a call from NY and my 3 year old reports "big waves" at R. *central LI* today. He charged anyway while mom held his hand. Apparently he wouldn't let her get out of the water for 3 hours. He just wanted to tumble around.
Meanwhile it's flat where I am(even by the "little man scale" of wave measurement).

6 hours in a pool today! What sort of loon dog spends 6 HOURS in chlorinated water(other than Looseness)? He would not get out until he finally had to eat dinner.

Little kids freakin' rule!
