Ok Hown does it work? I dont see almost anyone even trying them & dont think Ive ever seen a successful one live until I went out west. they did it like it was nothing, even groms, throwing buckets like lil minaiture tazmanian devils. Here I dont see it so I dont have alot to go on for a reference. When I look at the Mags, it appears that they really hit up the most verticle part of the wave & arch their backs & let the board head striaght back down the face as the crunch themselves back up & gain their ballance. I'd like to know if anyones capapble & can give advice, I wanna try it sometime but I think it requires lots of stomach & knee strength & also a lack of fear from getting pitched over the falls if ya eff it up.

I've only landed very few lay backs...they are really hard to recover from...

I've always looked at lay backs as not a move that you strive for, but as a way of salvaging a move that is pushed too far.  Lets say you approach a section and you hit it so hard your board gets away from you. Your only option is to lay back into the wave while griping your board with your feet and trying to pull it back underneath your body so you can stand back up.
A good wax job and a lot of flexibility helps.  Beware of hamstring cramp!

I don't think he is doing a cut back but he is laying back. It looks more like he completely hit the breaks with a 90 degree turn.

Nice, Yo Hopper, I know your right abut the flexability thing. Strong too. I have tried a few on my longboard & got stuck laying back. kept my feet on the deck but couldnt get out of it. Grin

I don't longboard often, buy I can only imagine how difficult it would be to recover from a lay-back.  Its hard enough on a shortboard to pull the board back underneath you.

Core/abdominal strength has to be there too for recovery {I would think}.

That right there is a big effing front side hack.

I think it was NYCWO who said it first. To paraphrase, ahem, everything you need to know about doing cutbacks (roundhouse, layback, whathaveyou) begins with watching Richard Cram. His spot in Blazing Boards II is nuts.  YOu will never see ANYONE (including Taylor Knox) cover as much ground and displace as much water as that guy does with a cutback.
