If I kick, chances are I wasn't in position and am not gonna make it. Then chances are that I feel childish, like it was a little fit that I threw, with the full knowledge that it wouldn't help.

Messed around with this again the other day - I hear what you're saying, but there's a def time and place for it....and I'm def coming to the conclusion that if it's timed right and done right, it won't leave you feeling foolish at all.

I'm a kicker too, It's ok, It's like same sex marriage- it has its benefits. I even kick on a long board, but that hurts Sad

Well who has seen someone doing a double kick or even an alternating arm out stroke to leg up kick on a longboard. It gives you some forward momentum, especially one double kick forward to get into a wave. So yes, if properly executed it does help. And I am a kicker, but surprisingly when I race for guarding on the paddle boards I just keep them up unless trying to get into waves.
Peace,
Kyle

I always notice that the most diehard kickers almost never get the wave. That said, I too do a little kick. The more I kick, the less likely I am to get the ride. Its kind of like flailing to catch an egg that has slipped out of your hand; very rarely does it produce a positive outcome.

Still more observation on this on my part - Kicking does no good whatsoever if you are not already in a relatively decent position to catch the wave. That is to say, if I didnt kick, I'd still likely juuusst about make it. What it appears to be useful for is an extra bit of thrust that allows you a bit of acceleration, and therefore pop up a fraction of second sooner....which of course can make a world of difference.

And again, I totally maintain that at most..at MOST it's two sharp kicks just as the wave is beginning to lift the tail of the board. Anything else is a waste of time, and likely will hurt more than help.

I never did it until I read this thread, and lately I've been doing it a lot. It helps to give you that extra push, especially when your arms are tired, but if you're not gonna make the wave, then you're still not gonna make the wave.
