  • Never been, and have zero interest in crowds which rules out all the "name brand breaks" in Oahu, which is fine with me. I'd be happy to hire a guide or do the surf camp thing, if it'd get me to some secret-ish spots.

Big Island maybe? I'm pretty clueless abou the place, but I assume that what's considered mediocre over there is pretty effing insane.

Pls PM any info if you don't want to divulge any top secret info.

    Thanks.

  • Saturday morning about 11 am there were LOTS of uncrowded waves in Hawaii ;)
Just kidding-- you dont need a guide--there are lots of spots that are relatively uncrowded-- helps if you wake up early--helps if you dont mind paddling to a distant reef--helps if you know someone to show you off the radar spots. There is a lemming effect here like everywhere--- some people like to surf with others and some spots will go unsurfed because they look far, or rocky or reefy or sharky, ect.. Of course sometimes they are all those, but not always. Sometimes theres lots of waves in the crowds-- last year from a distance saw 35 heads out at a well know waikiki spot, but paddled out to kill time after a conference there-- waist to chest, looked fun-- get out there and NO ONE can surf-- all tourists on rentals---bizzaro world... That being said, there are places where 3 is a crowd, and like any surf trip you are best served paddling out by yourself and being very respectful.
Big Island is an AWESOME place to travel, but I wouldnt recommend it for a surf trip unless youre lucky or have time on your hands.
Feel free to pm for specifics.

  • there are A spots, B spots and C spots, the A Spots are your Pipe and Ala Moana and they are always crowded as hell with rippers and dbags.  Your B spots are your Chunns Reef, Monster Mush or Pops are going to be less crowded with a more diversified group of both rippers and duffers.  Than there are your C Spots, those are spots that EZED or Money4donkeys take you and say, "C there are secret spots on the islands"  otherwise you probably wont make it to many of those.

He's ok, feeling fine-- no more incidents and seems to have gotten to the right guys for treatment. He's surfing, but Nancy has him wearing water wings so he wont go maki if his lights go out in the line-up :)
    EZED would go!!!!!!!
