  • wow.  just read thru the thread. I am amazed when people try to fight back only further exposing them as someone you don't want showing up at your favorite spot.  The cause for alarm is that you don't seem to know why it rubs people the wrong way.  Asking for spot info at random is something that's not looked highly upon in the surf community and I figure people that don't know this probably don't know a lot of other things like wave priority, board ditching, and many other things that can turn a nice break into a dangerous clusterf*ck.  The top and secret spots go to the surfers that are proven to not stink up a break with B.S.  These same top surfers are not going to go to an unfamiliar spot and randomly ask someone to spill their knowledge.  They know there is a code that keeps the great or secret breaks really fun instead of a six flags funboard bonanza.  I think the secrecy and brashness is good for surfing.  I like that you have to prove yourself over time to earn little tidbits of info.  I think it brings a lot of integrity to the sport but it also makes it a really interesting journey exploring different spots and keeping notes on what days were better where with certain swell angles and tides etc. Overall this might sound a bit overzealous, fraternal, and corny, but 1 ignorant surfer can ruin your board, body, or break. Instant gratification is overrated.  Be mad, but try to realize you're missing out on a lot of what surfing is about if you take the shortcuts.

You're missing the point. Please re-read my first post... I DID NOT ASK for specific spots that are secret. I asked WHERE to surf, a.k.a blocks in the area. I checked out Lido and there says a sign; "no surfboards". I DID NOT IN ANY WAY ask about THE SPOT EVERYONE loves to surf and WOULD love to have it all to their little selves, did I? I understand what you are saying, and you would have a point if I would have asked it in the way you are putting it.
Look, the bottom line is maybe I did come off wrong to the board. All here as members can do is read what I typed, and that's where the problem starts because you can't actually see what the person is saying and how they are saying it. So when I get the feedback like I did, maybe I should have taken a step back and expected it. But I was readying myself for what I got and was loaded for bear ANYWAY since I've experienced the locals only mentality and it sucks. Now that it is long gone, and I'm not pissed off and I'm over it because I've figured out where to go, I feel this is now just 5 pages of BS. You all can think what you want. At this point it is moot. You don't know me, you may have even surfed next to me last weekend. I probably let you or others on this board go on a wave I was in position on. That's the kind of guy I am. But because I am new to the beach I didn't, and never have, come off like a d!ck to anyone unless provoked. It's just not good for the sport, me, and there are plenty of waves to go around. Also, those of you who gut it out in the winter when people like me go skiing, I give them the props and first wave rights as locals. This isn't me trying to make amends here either so don't take it for weakness, because whether or not you dig me is not a priority for me. What I got now is an admin on this board looking to "set me up" in the water with one of his friends to meet in person. Not saying I would back down if something negative should come of it and I need to square one to protect myself, but I'm no dummy either and I don't walk into sh!t blindly. That goes against the training I have. Plus, not sure how many "friends" would have showed up either. Then as it usually goes in many instances, the result would have to come back with some of my friends to make it a fair one. Just stupid overall considering the root cause. But you know what, It's been a nice (maybe for some) time getting to know those of you who actually answered my post without being an a$$hole about it. May I bump into you in the lineup. But someone asked about doing the same on other sites, well I've asked similar questions on other sites regarding beach access for 4-wheeling and they were all cool people. Many who've replied surf Montauk too and were willing to pass on some "insider trading". You all may have your little community and that's cool, I like clicks, but some of you need to lighten up. SERIOUSLY. Not the whole board, just some, and you know who you are....  >:(  It's Long Island for Christ sake, NEWS FLASH: It's no secret there's surf on LI...!  :o  You don't OWN it, :o ::)  and you are no way surfing some secret spot in Bali.  :-* :'( :-\ :-X
Good luck, enjoy the surf, lay back and be cool.  8) ;D :D ;) :)

    I'm gone from here.  :(

Seriously. But before you do, hear me out John. I havent been surfing for 30 years. I havent even been surfing for five years. The first thing i did when i started to get serious about surfing was join on here. Ive asked hundreds of questions, and got thousands of answers. some sarcastic, some ripping on me for fun, but NO ONE, HAS EVERRRRRR had to be a dick to me. much less Seacliff. Throw in an openion or two into a few threads and everyone will be cool. This isnt the encyclopedia of surf spots, its a discussion forum.

Dont blame it on localism dude. There is no such thing. I dont know most people on here in real life and no one is a dickhead. I live in jersey and grew up in Long island, I frequent lido, rock, LB, I surf down in all the jersey spots you said (learned all of them from people on here btw) AND NO ONE IS A DICK! I surf the jersey spots you claim not to surf due to "too many punks", i park my BMW with NY plates right on the sand and hit the waves, and never has anyone had to let the air out of my tires. Im not a local at ANY beach i surf, most times i surf alone, and i have never had one person be a dickhead to me. So if people are constantly being a dickhead to you, my friend, maybe you should look in the mirror.

  • John, I admit that you got brown trout in the thread, but you kinda walked into the thread with this "i'm the man" vibe. That could just be me, but thats the vibe I got from your initial post. and your comment about LI not having its own spots is beyond ridiculous. The reason that we dont have great waves like Bali or Indo is even more reason why we need spots that are on the DL so whatever good waves come through you dont have to go through 20 guys in the lineup. Onefin rips on people a bunch (you know its true fin), but almost all the time its just for fun and sarcastic. Onefin is a super chill dude, I mean he opened his home today for anyone that wanted to celebrate his birthday, sounds like a total dick to me (sarcasm). So please just kill this thread before it gets out of hand again, and John I'm sure if you didn't ask so publicly people would be more than happy to help you out.

  • haha i remember reading posts from the old nysurf.com for 6 months before i posted anything. Compared to the brown trout that used to given out to anyone that made one of their first posts asking about spots or information regarding the beaches john got off amazingly easy. Even for this site i think he got off pretty easily
