  • LIJohn... the issue is not entirely what you were asking about, but how you asked it. Your approach was tantamount to barging into a crowded party and shouting, "MY NAME IS JOHN! I LIKE BEER! WHERE'S THE KEG???"

It has less to do with surfing and more to do with message board etiquette (which, in a strange way, aren't all that different.) I mean... check the post counts - these guys have been around these parts a while.

If you choose to stick around, great - welcome to the community. Give it some time before you post your next topic. Do a search or two and see if the info has already been posted. Reply to a couple of them if they fit your inquiry.

In essence, your demeanor is more fitting of the "young generation today" then I think you realize. You first topic post was the equivalent of paddling to the peak on your first day out, knowwhatI'msayin'?
Tummee -  I hear what you are saying. I did a search and found nothing.

Really?  You must not have looked very hard, because in about thirty seconds with teh google machines, I found this very informative page with a map and photos and swell direction info and water temp info and tide info and other stuff that you might find useful.  Also, if you click around on that website, which I found after about thirty seconds wif teh googles, you'll find similar information about other nearby breaks.

p.s. I hope some Straightoff Adolph newbie drops in on you and dings your board.

  • Summer on long island is really the off season.most beaches are parking for locals only.get to where you want to go before 7or 8 as attendents will not be on duty then. deppending on what beach you are at the life guards will come on duty and section off the beaches for surfing or swimming by nine or 10am some local beaches will ticket your car if you dont have a local sticker after 11am.as I am not a local of I have to get there early or late after 4 pmand it will be crowded. and as you can tell by the chatter the locals are agro and some can surf ,some really good, and some are learning. so.but as a rule of thumb the crowds thin the further east you go.summer and the bermuda highs but spring and fall when the summer ends is the best season yet  some towns and state beaches have extended seasons.most people park there car and walk right out while a ten minute walk is considered a secret spot and ya you can surf alone in overhead surf on long island.shhhhh

  • Hey man - Don't rip me because you think this is a silly question... I am new to the area and although I've done my share of east coast surfing, I've never been to this area before to surf. Now that I live out here I wanted to know what the best spots are. Any help would be greatful.  ??? ;D

I just re-read onefin's initial response, I'll quote it here for sake of completeness:

please tell me this isnt a joke.  There is no surfing in Lido, you are permitted to surf at lido west, pacific blvd, & lincoln blvd during the summer from 9-6 after that you can surf wherever you want.  All of long beach is beach breaks with jetties sprinkled in the mix.  The biggest hazards are jellyfish, jetties, and coney island whitefish.  There can at times be an evil current that runs E to W this current is worse at lido than other spots as there are fewer jetties to break up the littoral drift.  Your best bet is to stop off at Unsound Surf Shop on Park Ave speak with Mike or Dave and they can clue you in a little better.  Good luck and always look to the peak to make sure no one is deeper than you before paddling for the wave.

Besides the first sentence which is a clear reference to the amount of people that come on here thru the course of a year and try and yank our collective chains, the entire rest of the post is so completely on the mark and helpful that it's ridiculous.

To be accurate, onefin gave you no less than 8 specific, direct, and factually accurate items to assist you. Outside of offering to pick you up, drive you to the beach, wax your board for you, paddle you out and push you into a wave, what in the world else were you looking for?? I completely don't get what you found offensive or where you believed you were being ripped.

Oh well. What else can I say except good luck to you. I don't know what other information you were looking for but I hope you find it. Ultimately it's your loss if you choose to bail on this site - there's a ton of good people here who are more than willing to share what they know - but of course that wont ever possibly work for you here if you're going to take offense and consider yourself being ripped when in fact help - and a lot of it - is being offered.

Meet me in the Land of Hope and Dreams.

No sweat man.. I grew up in NYC, spent the majority of my summers in NJ surfing casino pier, 'Squan, Seven Presidents, Isl. Beach, Atl City, and spent many trips up north to Maine and Rhode Isl. Been to Costa Rica, but getting married has quelled many other "planned" trips. Been surfing since I was 16 and I am 39 now. I'm not Kelly slater, but I'm no wilbur kookmire either.  Moved to LI and want to know what the locals have to say about the spots, where to surf and not get in anyone's way. See, I'm actually a laid back kinda guy. But pompus-a$$ people get under my skin pretty quickly. Which is why I don't surf Squan anymore. All the locals I know there have either moved on or don't surf anymore. It has been taken over by a bunch of punks. Not good. Last time I was there I had a little get to know you with a punk who was airing out one of my tires on my truck. Not good, man. So, I hope I've added a little more to who I am.
I will start over... If I offended anyone coming on here then I regret that. But I think anyone in my shoes would have gotten fired up with some of the replies I've gotten right off the top.

  • Lido is a beach for gay obese people over 60 who only wear sunscreen and safari hats all day (as in wrinkly butt naykid)  - head to Zach's Bay man, and paddle out by the stadium side - just watch the rip.
