  • I've been to tenerife and gran canaria w/wife.  I think it was Nov, but i'm really not sure.  Weather was great, a few interesting sights and lotsa of natural beauty.  the ocean has that nice deep-ocean powerful feel and look.  Memories that stick out.  I caught a mahi-mahi with my hands.  Great empanadas.  A couple wide dark sand tourist-friendly beaches interspersed between rocky volcanic shorelines.  Crazy high road up the volcano.  Good fish tacos.  Lots of germans and brit tourists. Reasonable accomodations, but not much luxe at the time.

  • What areas of Tenerife and Gran Canaria did you stay in, and which areas of each island did you end up surfing the most?

From photos it appears as though the beaches by many of the better breaks are very rocky, did you're wife chill on the beach while you surfed, or did you travel for early sessions then return to hang with the lady.

Were any of the "tourist beaches"  good for surfing as well?

Swell seems extremely consistent for the atlantic, I know that I'll be happy, but trying to figure out logistics with the lady before pulling the trigger.  Not sure which island we would hit, yet.  I assume we'll just stay on one for the entire trip was originally thinking Tenerife or Lanzarote, but need to do further research.

    Thanks!

  • The Canary Islands arent called the Hawaii of the Atlantic for nothing.can get Crazy big.Lanzarote ,the town of Famara has a cool little surf scene with every one either kite surfin wind surfing jumping off cliffs with kites on thier backs or just surfing and fishing everyone is friendly with a euro vibe and english or euro expats. although the eastern side has the 5 star hotels. a ferry can take you to Fuerto ventura, the town of Correlejo with a touristy trendy vibe.from hostels to 5 star.daily boat trips to los lobos.the north shore is a park that the surfing community has kept open. surfing all within a few hours beware of rips a places named suicides.people have died here.and nude bathing as it is europe/africa.also the state may have closed the road between correllejo (Park preserve)and the airport thus adding to you travel time.Gran cannaria las palmas has a city vibe tourist surf scene or you can venture out to other brakes.big or small depends on your taste and conditions.windy with a kite surf scene.good food good people id say go and enjoy it is europe after all.although flight travel time plus board travel fees in euros might want you to leave the board at home and rent or buy a board while there yes although off the rack some surf tec some nsp etc.Enjoy

    Thanks!

mostly surfed on tenerife. i can't remember the spots that well - i was mostly hitting lefts.  I think called izquierda (of course) and el lobo.  And there was another decent one very near a sheltered touristy beach around playa de la americas.  But really i don't know the names of where i surfed.  I just broke out a map and explored.  There are soooo many breaks here.  Just depends on swell, wind, tide, and what you're looking for.

No matter where you go, you will, however, get a taste of real ocean juice.  Definitely some very powerful swells (and currents!), so take your time and figure out the setup from the beach before you charge in.

But yea, most of the shoreline is rocky volcanic sharpness.  Still, there's places for the wife.

  • How was the cost?  They're on the Euro and are an island chain, however I've heard that in general it is cheaper than one would expect given those two factors.  Thanks for everything!

  • IMO  Lanzarote has the best surf. The town of Famara is a good place to base yourself, has good surf spots with a 20 minute drive , either direction. Town is small and reasonably affordable.
North coast of Fuerteventura is also an option, but the 3 times that I visited both island in 1 trip Lanzarote has always had the way better waves.

Nov / Dec is a good time. Take a short or 3/2 wetsuit.

    have fun
