  • Sure it remains to be seen...

Being at the point in my evolution where step-up sized surf won't equate to me doing anything other then get in the way-  I was thinking of heading out to a more protected spot by *************  ***** *****.  (So its probably pretty obvious but i still dont want to be the first to drop the name on this spot).  I'm sure this isn't an original idea, so I'm looking for advice on specific spots and best tide times from anyone who has surfed out there.  Or even if its likely to get much swell at all.
Feel free to PM me about specifics.  I'd appreciate any help.  And.. you would be doing your part to keep another beginner out of the local lineup. :)   THanks!

  • Yup nothing pretty about hot dog land.  Two hot dogs huh?  Practically suicidal.  Thank god for starbuck's and their blanket network of public toilets.

  • Part of the problem of barrier island style beach breaks like we have all along the NY NJ coast is that there are deperately few "protected spots" where the geography will help out by knocking down the swell size for you.

The way to do it is simply observe - check a bunch of different spots when it's big and even when it's not so big - and in particular check spots that normally dont break much at all. Make notes for yourself. On the biggest swells at the "usual places", these other spots may start breaking - albeit not as big, but since that's what you're looking for, it's all good.

It's true today, it's always been true: Seek and ye shall find. Within a 6 mile stretch of beachbreak you'd be stunned on the variance in swell size that can occur sometimes, nevermind what's happening across the entire 247 miles of NY NJ coast.

Good luck and be safe! And wherever you go, don't surf alone, but don't bring a crowd.  ;)

that's the problem. i don't have a buddy. maybe if there are any other beginners here, we can team up, but thanks for the info. i should def walk that boardwalk a bit more and find some other places that could be fun on a bigger day so that i can still be in the water.

  • I am a late beginner and a coward when it comes to bigger waves when I have to deal w/ jetties and sticks.  Rocky, Damian et al, if you are looking to go explore anytime after noon on Sunday I would love to join you guys.  I also have a car, albeit one that can fit only 2 more people and their boards, which might be useful if none of you all drive.

  • I'm certainly going to be DP-ing Mon-Thu, pending my work situation.  I'm hoping to roam around to some more sheltered spots I have in mind to find manageable conditions on Sunday.

Ehh...on further review, I modified this post. I realize your reference was vague, damian, but even so - there are certain places that even vague references are best left unsaid, or at very least kept to PM's and other more private communications.

    Thanks for understanding.

  • guys: finding waves in unexpected places is one of the biggest thrills in surfing.  don't waste it on the internet.  look at a map, think about the wind, and plot an adventure.  trust me--it'll be worth it when you round the corner and find a perfect wave in the storm.  they're out there.  i'll be on it tomorrow  ;D
