Heya - my cuz just came last weekend and said that he's been doing lotsa SUP. Mentioned that he ordered a 8'6" and that there's a big trend toward shorter wider boards. Curious about your thoughts?
Honestly, one of the bigger obstacles to me trying more of the SUP thing is the damn size of the board and storage/hassle. Now, i could definitely make an 8'6" work and would like to expand the repertoire and enjoy the workout. Whaddya think?

My buddy was talking to me about seeing Mel Pu'u surf a very short, superwide quad fish and killing it at Makaha. He's a BIG boy so as long as the board has width, anything goes. We're talking 36" wide here! It really opened up his mind to SUP possibilities. I personally view SUP surfing more as an extension of longboarding than shortboarding and I'm riding a real Cadillac-the 12'x31"x4.25" Ron House shaped Laird model and I love it for knee to a bit overhead and doing downwinders(an important part of the whole SUP experience to me). Kind of like the original beach boy style for now but I can see myself one day getting more into the shortboard feeling SUPs and will probably get around to picking up something around 10'6"x29x4.5" "Ripper" quad swallow from Blane Chambers at Paddle Surf Hawaii eventually. I know these dimensions seem VERY longboard-ish but, with the paddle in your hands and a bit of experience, these hard parralel-railed boards can RIP really hard. One bit of advice when you go with a superwide model, though. Be sure to have a handle put in for transportation purposes and get the right roof rack for your car. Oh, and you have to promise to let me ride it next time I'm back east.
Aloha.

wow -thanks for the insights and suggestions. i think i might do it this summer if my schedule isn't as bad. never woulda thought about the handle, but i guess at 30+" wide, even you'd have a hard time getting your arm around it.
it's possible that i'd get order it and pick it up in the islands when the family gets together. if so, you'll certainly have to show me how it's really done. otherwise, back east it is.

Not a problem. Hopefully we'll share some waves in August if you make it out.

LN, I just found a site for you where they do a full breakdown of SUP performance on a wide variety of boards. www.kenalu.com Very interesting. Sounds kind of like an "SUP Fry"
