Help! Surfing Lido, L.I.
« on: June 17, 2009, 12:52:26 PM »
Hey!
Glad to be here.... My wife and I moved to LI and I'm looking where to paddle out in Lido Beach... I drove to Lido Beach Park but was annoyed to see the "No Surfboards" written on the sign at the beach entrance. Anyone know where to go so the officials don't hassle you? What are the hours? Can you surf all day, or have to wait for the guards to go off duty. What type of break is it? Anything to watch out for for a first timer in Lido?

Thanks! See you in the water!

please tell me this isnt a joke.  There is no surfing in Lido, you are permitted to surf at lido west, pacific blvd, & lincoln blvd during the summer from 9-6 after that you can surf wherever you want.  All of long beach is beach breaks with jetties sprinkled in the mix.  The biggest hazards are jellyfish, jetties, and coney island whitefish.  There can at times be an evil current that runs E to W this current is worse at lido than other spots as there are fewer jetties to break up the littoral drift.  Your best bet is to stop off at Unsound Surf Shop on Park Ave speak with Mike or Dave and they can clue you in a little better.  Good luck and always look to the peak to make sure no one is deeper than you before paddling for the wave.

I am at a lose of words with this one. If you do choose to go there and the surf is good, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE move down to a less crowded area. Plenty of room to spread out, no need to sit on the main peak.

Hey man - Don't rip me because you think this is a silly question... I am new to the area and although I've done my share of east coast surfing, I've never been to this area before to surf. Now that I live out here I wanted to know what the best spots are. Any help would be greatful.  ??? ;D

onefin's initial response was all you need.  lock this guy up before it gets ugly.

how about this, you're new to the area, start at one end of the island and do a beach run to the other end and take note of what you see.  bam, you just learned most everything you need to know.

Isn't this typical of the young generation today... All attitude right off the box. You know, your prob. the kind who drops in on everyone and only does so because you are surrounded by your boys and all that sh!t. Listen... I could care the less if you LIKE me. I'm not here to be accepted by YOU. Sorry. I think if you read my first thread, (and by the looks of your typing the idea you are literate is questionable as well), I think I've outlined some pretty detailed info about me. Sorry if I didn't tell you my fav. color is blue. So, if THAT is the most helpful info you gave all week, that's great. Come by, I have a lollypop waiting for you.

You didnt give a single detail about yourself other than you just moved here and I gave you plenty of good advice.  I am not a wolfpak or a youngster but after the way you have come off your right I would go out of my way to drop in on you.  Your favorite color matches your attitude, lucky you captain douchey.   Might I suggest you wait for an epic day and paddle out at laurelton, go out of your way to ask chris martin or jimmy enos if your in a good spot im sure they will give you better advice than you found here.  Scumbags, hmmmm.  For being new to the area you sure seem to make sure you fit in.  FTW to you my friend.

I see... So to your point, if understood correctly, you start your reply with; "Tell me this isn't a joke?".... And I'm supposed to say hey, cool man, be my friend? like I say, scumbag.  >:(

If you are not a youngster then you should understand where I'm coming from. Right?? If you worked in a shop before, or hung out with laidback riders who just wanted to surf, told cool surf stories and had a few cold ones with friends and never felt the need to be a d!ck to people just for the sake of being one. You should and would understand. But the feel I got from a few of you is the typical locals-only vibe. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I took you and your buddy a different way... But, like I said, I didn't come here to make friends with YOU. Or your friend. Man, I'm too old and too experienced in life to need to feel accepted by some, when I know what matters. Good day man, maybe we'll meet in the lineup one day. Just hope your keyboard muscles don't translate.

LIJohn... the issue is not entirely what you were asking about, but how you asked it. Your approach was tantamount to barging into a crowded party and shouting, "MY NAME IS JOHN! I LIKE BEER! WHERE'S THE KEG???"

It has less to do with surfing and more to do with message board etiquette (which, in a strange way, aren't all that different.) I mean... check the post counts - these guys have been around these parts a while.

If you choose to stick around, great - welcome to the community. Give it some time before you post your next topic. Do a search or two and see if the info has already been posted. Reply to a couple of them if they fit your inquiry.

In essence, your demeanor is more fitting of the "young generation today" then I think you realize. You first topic post was the equivalent of paddling to the peak on your first day out, knowwhatI'msayin'?

Tummee -  I hear what you are saying. I did a search and found nothing. The reason why I post was to ask the experienced where to paddle out, no issue there, right? I see many photos of Lido online and it looks like it can get good. So, I asked the question. Maybe if you would look at their threads in response too, you would see where I am coming from. No? But no sweat man, it's not me who's looking to take first wave over the locals... Just wanted to know some details from those who are supposed to know... But I do like beer...  :P
