Been to both places and loved them both.  If you're taking Jane, they are both great for kids.  I would choose Tofino in Sept. simply because Eleuthra sits dead smack in the middle of the Atlantic hurricane track and has been badly hit in the past.  There are scars all over the island from the last one.

Tofino is fun.  You'll have to stow some of your deeply ingrained disdain for hippies though, since they comprise a large portion of the town's population.  When Laura and I went, we drove up to Vancouver after a wedding in Seattle.  We spent the night in the city and then caught the ferry from Nanaimo to Vancouver Island.  Then, its about at 2+ hour drive to the west coast through some of the most beautiful countryside in the world.  The waves I caught were good, not great, but it was more than made up for by the view from the lineup, which is one of the most unique I've ever seen.  Snow-capped mountains, sea stacks, huge forests.  Its really pretty radical.  If the waves are no good, there's lots of great hiking trails, empty beaches, little hippy cafes.  You can take a boat trip to visit some great hot springs.  It rains a lot, but I think September is actually the lowest average rainfall month in the year for them.

Let's have a beer and discuss.  Its been a while.
