For everyone interested in subscribing to the NastyCast, you can access the subscription page by clicking here:

Subscription FAQ's

What are the subscription rates?

Subscription rates are as follows: One time payment of $36 for a full 12 months of access (Basically, $3/month)

Subscriptions run 12 months from the date you sign up.
Payment types accepted: MC, Visa, or PayPal.

What does the Forecast look like?

After I pay, how quickly will I get access?
All subscription applications will be reviewed by little_nasty, and after approval, you'll receive an e-mail. In some cases it may take a day or two, but often it will be the same day. Then, after logging in to the forums, you'll see a new room just below the Aloha Room called "Current Forecast". IMPORTANT: If you do not receive access within 48 hours, please PM little_nasty or me, or send us an email at webmaster@nynjsurf.com

I've heard a lot of talk about a community service requirement. What's the deal?
It would be impossible, impractical, and unenforcible to "require" community service as an absolute condition to having your subscription request approved. It's suggested that people who apply for access perform the equivalent of three acts of community service per year - but this is a very personal matter and ultimately what is hoped is simply this: Subscribers demonstrate a commitment to community service commensurate with their own personal beliefs and abilities, and just as important - work with us to help promote opportunities to better the surf community as a whole and our small community here in particular. Utopian? Sure. But there's nothing wrong with that. We welcome the input of everyone, subscribers or not - on ways to improve the community. I guess it's conceivable that someone's privileges would be revoked and their remaining subscription balance refunded, but the optimist in me can't see how anyone wouldn't be willing to live up to at least the spirit of the "requirement" in one manner or another. I think I'm right about this, hope I never find out otherwise.

What's contained in the 'cast?
The most recent 7 day projections for three regions: Eastern Long Island, Central/Western Long Island, and New Jersey. This includes not just wave forecasts, but tide charts, chill index, some good background music, and coming soon, improved wind modeling. The casts are updated daily, except when little_nasty is on a much needed vacation. At times there's even updates inside the same day if conditions are variable!

So where does my subscription money go?
Several places:
  • Offset the cost of software needed to develop and produce the forecast
  • Purchase data to develop a better nearshore model for wave forecasting - improved science means better/more accurate future 'casts!
  • Provide startup funding for the Charity Big Wave contest - all subscribers receive an automatic invite
  • Annual Luau get-together - all subscribers receive an automatic invite
  • Provide support of other local charities as the need and ability allows
Not a bad return on investment for 3 or 4 bucks a month!

I hear that subscriptions for those 18 and under and those with special situations are free. Is that true?
Absolutely. But it's also absolutely true that the person, regardless of age, be demonstrating the "commitment to community service" described above. It's simple, really - be a contributing member in some way and help us do something good overall through your thoughts, ideas and other contributions, and yeah, absolutely. If you believe you should be considered for a fee waiver, just send a private message requesting access to little_nasty.

Hey SeaCliff, I see you use the word "We" and "Us" a lot in this document. What do you actually have to do with the 'cast?
Good point. I have nothing to do with it, actually, other than having the honor of hosting the 'cast here on NYNJSurf.com. (Note to the casual reader: I'm the webmaster here.) The NastyCast is the sole property of little_nasty - he developed everything about it, and it's his vision that subscription revenues be put right back in to improve the science, and improve the community. It's a vision I admire, and one that I share. I believe so much in what he's doing that I actually tried to pay for a subscription myself, but little_nasty would have none of it and paypal'd me my money back. I'll get it to him somehow, tho. It's a vision I hope you all share and support as well.
