*********************** Press Release
1st Annual Cameron’s Quest Surf Contest
7/22/08
The First Annual Cameron’s Quest Surf Contest and After Party took place this past Thursday in Wildwood, NJ with a resounding success. The day’s activities kicked off at 7:00 am with registration for all surf contest participants at the surfing beach at 12th Ave. in North Wildwood, followed shortly by an opening address from City Councilman Patrick Rosenello. With the help of Joe Keenan and Nick Bricker from the NSSA (the National Scholastic Surfing Association) the contest got underway at 8:00 am with the first heat being a showdown between all of the area surf shops competing for the rights to claim the first annual Cameron’s Cup. In Stanley Cup fashion, the winning shop will return with the cup each subsequent year to defend its ownership. The area shops provided a peek at our local talent with the eventual title going to Southend Surf Shop in Cape May. Additional divisions followed including Groms (kids below the age of 14), Open Women’s, Opens Men’s, Longboard, and Masters (over the age of 30). First place finishes went to Nick Cox, Katie Spagnolo, Dave Santiago, Rob Kulisek, and Chris Wood respectively. The vibe on the beach was fresh and strong compared to the format and feeling at most surf contests. At one point, contestant Ryan Griffin of Wildwood was heard commenting, “This is the most fun I’ve ever had at any surf contest”. Midway through the morning’s heats everyone took a break from the competition, grabbed their boards, and hit the water for a tradition known as the “Circle of Friends”. The “Circle of Friends” is a time-honored tribute practiced world wide by the surfing community where everyone paddles out beyond the waves, joins hands while raising them high, and gives thanks for everything we have with a series of cheers and shouts. Everyone who could find something that floats, joined in and had a great time. Afterwards, the heats resumed and the competition continued. As the day’s temperature increased, the crowd on the beach was treated to free Italian Ice courtesy of Dreamsicles, slices of pizza courtesy of Dolce Italia, bottled water courtesy of Acme Supermarkets and Coca Cola, and chips courtesy of Utz. The day’s competition came to a close around 4:00 pm with smiles on everyone’s faces. After the contest everyone headed home to recharge their batteries and prepare for the evening’s festivities. The After Party kicked off at 7:00 pm at Juan Pablo’s on Pacific Ave. in Wildwood. All in attendance were treated to a great spread of Mexican food, drink specials, free giveaways, and more. With Cameron’s Quest, at it’s core, being a fundraiser to help support the medical expenses of young Cameron Dauria and raise awareness of pediatric cancer in general, raffle tickets were sold for a chance to win some outstanding prizes. Up for grabs was a surf trip to Costa Rica, surfboards, a ski trip and snowboard, as well as loads of additional packaged prizes. Some went home with tickets to see Jack Johnson and new I Pods for winning the Music Package, while others went home with gift certificates for tattoo work and some beautifully framed artwork for winning the Rebel Image Package. With the event’s theme being “A Coastal Surf Community Joining Together to Fight Pediatric Cancer” we couldn’t forget the kids in attendance at the party. All kids upon entry received a free raffle ticket for a separate batch of prizes selected just for them. There were smiles all around as all the kids took part in the coloring contest, “design your own surfboard” contest, and claimed their raffle prizes. All in all, the day’s events were a smashing success – raising a considerable amount of money for the Dauria family and effectively raising awareness of the battle against pediatric cancer. Especially considering that this was the first year for it being held, “the turnout at both the contest and the after party greatly exceeded our expectations”, said organizer Britt Wetzel of Wildwood. After the response received for our inaugural event, please be on the lookout for upcoming events to benefit additional families and further spread awareness regarding pediatric cancer. Cameron’s mother and father, Travis Dauria and Karen Rogers, would like to send a heartfelt thanks to all of the sponsors and businesses, as well as all those in attendance throughout the day, that helped make Cameron’s Quest a reality.
