Last year's event featured a couple of great names in local surfing - haven't heard about this year yet - regardless, it's a tremendous event and a tremendous cause!!

This is one i'd really love to do one day. It must be an incredible paddle. Plus, it's a cause dear to my heart since I have taken on a summer school assignment working with kids with autism.

2G was talking story about the paddle when we met up this past winter. He was actually "guiding" Doerner and Lopez on the paddle since he knows those currents so well. A hardcore paddle for sure.
Alex? Justin? Mark? Round 2?

Do you have to have an SUP to participate? Can I canoe or lay down paddle on a long board? I would really like to participate.

I really don't think you want to paddle 28 miles on a longboard.

ha ha!

basically my 12.5' board IS just a massive thick longboard - and i will NEVER prone paddle & do it again on that thing

And even if I had a halfway decent SUP board, I can't do it because of bad circulation in my right foot, starts to go to sleep after over an hour and it's hard to wake it up - so far no doctor has given me anything concrete to go on, one recommended I see a neurosurgeon....what? for my foot? And as if i want to find out I have brain tumor - I think NOT!!!

I can stand up paddle on my canoe.

Shoots. Try and get your hands on an unlimited class number like 1fin has. That things looks like a guided missile.

I don't mean any offense. Seriously, none at all. But do you propose to learn how to SUP paddle and be ready for a 28 mile paddle around Manhattan with treacherous currents and dangerously polluted water in 6 weeks? Your heart's in the right place Yo Bama but just be sure you talk to NYC W/O, 2G and 1Fin so you know what you're getting into(not saying you CAN'T do it, mind you. For all I know you're an incredibly talented waterman). But please take caution. We're talking 28 miles with some tricky currents.
By your posts, I'm guessing that you haven't really SUPed before or figure that Jennifer Anniston can paddle in the flats for the Paparazzi, so how hard could it be? I could be dead wrong and, if so, I apologize. But be sure you're WELL prepared physically, mentally and skills-wise before attempting this.Again, no disrespect intended. Just exercise caution on this one.
Aloha.

Awesome. Props to you, bro. Next year if I get the time off(next year the HI school calendar might go back to conventional and I can do it), i'd really like to go for it(will talk to DD about getting an invite as he lives down the road). That'll give me a year and 6 weeks to be ready. Wink

No offense takin, I understand your concern and I kinda expected that response. Of course I'd like to train a lil for it.
The stamina is there, the balance, and like you said the heart is there. I wasn't kidding about stand up paddling with my canoe. I paddled it around Gerritsen Inlet and Jamaica Bay area. Now I know thats not exactly the same but the movement appears to be quite similiar, if anything the canoe is less stable than the SUP boards are. I don't know nothin from nothin, but theres only one way to find out.  Wink

Good stuff. Just be sure to talk to those guys and really pick their brains if you're serious. This paddle is the paddling equivalent of a marathon. Most people who never did a 5k and don't own running shoes don't enter marathons. But there are those crazy fvckers who do I guess. Those most be the same guys who do stand-up paddle canoe. Wink
